The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform responsible managerial, administrative and professional engineering work in the Engineering Department. The employee’s primarily responsibility is to furnish professional engineering advice, assistance and service to employees and other departments in connection with the planning or executing of public works improvement programs. Supervision is exercised over professional and sub-professional engineering personnel engaged in public works development and engineering design. The essential functions are: supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff; assists in directing operation of the Engineering Department; assists in the management of the department's operating budget; provides technical expertise to assist with the development and design of projects and other highly technical areas; and directs and oversees the design section. Employee works under the general supervision of the City Engineer and is expected to organize and direct City Engineering work in accordance with established policies. Exercises the responsibilities of the City Engineer in the City Engineer’s absence.
Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering supplemented by seven years of professional experience and/or training that includes public works infrastructure design, management and supervision. Experience using AutoCAD, ArcView GIS, Microsoft Window and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Outlook) software preferred; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered. Must possess and maintain Professional Engineer registration in the State of Alabama.

Must have and maintain a valid Alabama Driver License and an insurable driving records as needed to travel to various sites.
