Civil Engineer I (#CI2071)

Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform entry- level professional engineering work.  Incumbent is  distinguished from the Civil Engineer II in that the Civil Engineer I performs engineering assignments of gradually increasing complexity under the close supervision of senior Engineers.  The essential functions are: prepares engineering plans and designs for roadway and other transportation related projects; reviews engineering plans for residential and commercial development; inspects construction sites; and monitors environmental compliance of the City's storm water permit and landfill operating permit.  The Civil Engineer I reports to Civil Engineer III and/or Civil Engineer II.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering  from a four-year engineering program approved by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).  Must have Engineer Intern status in Alabama or a state having reciprocal agreement with Alabama or the ability to obtain EI status within six months after hiring or an equivalent combination of education and experience.  

NOTE:    Qualifying education, training and experience that provide the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job will be considered.

 


Special Requirements

Ability to obtain and maintain a valid Alabama Driver’s License and an insurable driving record as needed to operate a City or County vehicle in the performance of work tasks.  Works in an office and field environment as needed to carry out various job assignments.  Works under extreme weather conditions such as hot and cold temperatures and be exposed to various heights, rough terrain, wild animals and insects to inspect various projects sites.  Walks, climbs, bends, stoops, and crawls to perform inspection and environmental monitoring duties.
