The fundamental reason this classification exists is to support and assist the Director of Sanitation in the planning, coordination and direction of activities at the Sanitation Department. The Assistant Director performs administrative duties and oversees the daily operations of sanitation services including assisting the Director with developing short and long range plans, supervising personnel, preparing and administering the department's budget, receiving and handling complaints and requests, and directing staff activities. The Assistant Director reports directly to the Director and is responsible for the department in the absence of the Director. The work of the Assistant Director differs from that of Director, in that, the Director is ultimately responsible for the performance of the department and supervises management level staff. The Assistant Director supervises the administrative/clerical support staff.
