Introduction

The Maryland Department of Labor is accepting applications for the position of Veterinarian. The Maryland Racing Commission veterinarian is responsible for the overseeing the health and well-being of horses participating in races at Maryland racetracks. Main Purpose of Job

The Maryland Department of Labor is accepting application for the position of Veterinarian. The Maryland Racing Commission veterinarian is responsible for overseeing the health and well-being of horses participating in races at Maryland racetracks. This position involves conducting pre-race examinations, monitoring horses during races, and ensuring compliance with state regulations regarding equine health and medication.

POSITION DUTIES

Duties may include but not limited to:
  • Conduct thorough pre-race examinations of all horses entered to race, assessing their fitness and health status.
  •  Monitor horses during races and post-race for any signs of distress or injury.
  •  Collect and process biological samples for drug testing in accordance with established protocols.
  •  Maintain accurate and detailed medical records for all examined horses.
  •  Advise the stewards on matters related to equine health and recommend scratches when necessary.
  •  Oversee the implementation and enforcement of medication rules and regulations.
  •  Investigate and report on any incidents of animal cruelty or neglect at racetracks.
  •  Collaborate with track management, trainers, and owners to promote best practices in equine care and welfare.
  •  Participate in continuing education to stay current with advances in veterinary medicine and racing regulations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from an accredited institution
Experience: New Graduate or experience in equine medicine.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Strong preference will be given to applicants that possess the following. Include clear and specific information on your application regarding the qualification(s).

 Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from an accredited institution

 Active license to practice veterinary medicine in the state of Maryland

 Graduate or experience in equine veterinary medicine

 Thorough knowledge of horse racing regulations and medication rules

 Strong diagnostic and decision-making skills

 Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

 Ability to work under pressure and make quick, informed decisions

 Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

All candidates are subject to a background check against files maintained by the Division of Unemployment Insurance (MDOL/DUI) to determine whether any monies are owed to MDOL/DUI as a result of unemployment overpayment/fraud. Any unpaid debt may have an impact on whether or not a candidate is offered employment.
