Main Purpose of Job

To provide speech, language, AAC, and aural rehabilitation services to MSD students, including those who may have multiple disabilities. Speech-Language services help support a bilingual approach by facilitating and enhancing student communication skills.

POSITION DUTIES

Administer language, speech, AAC, and auditory skill diagnostic evaluations;

Conduct speech, language, speech reading, AAC, and auditory skills development;

Evaluate treatment plans and revise as necessary.

Prepare and maintain necessary records and report on student services and progress;

Participate in any school-based meetings as assigned or requested.

Serve as an IEP team member, determine present levels of performance, and establish goals specifically addressed to the student's needs;

Use developmentally appropriate activities, a variety of therapy materials, various assistive
 technologies, and oral-motor strategies as needed;

Adapt therapy strategies to facilitate student progress, including service delivery methods (services both inside and outside of the classroom);

Consult with other professional and nonprofessional personnel, including conferences with parents and classroom staff, concerning student performance;

Assist with training of classroom staff regarding amplification equipment, feeding/swallowing precautions, and/or augmentative communication use;

Conduct and participate in seminars, in-service and professional training programs;

Maintain confidentiality about students' care;

Assume other responsibilities as designated by the Department Head.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A minimum of a Master’s Degree as set by the Maryland State Board of Examiners for Speech-Language Pathologists under the licensing requirements.

Experience: Under the leadership of the Supervisor of Related Services and in collaboration with an interdisciplinary team, the SLP will evaluate and treat the unique deaf and hard-of-hearing population at MSD. Considerations of hearing levels, language abilities and cultural diversity are essential to meeting the needs of this population. The SLP will have the knowledge of the theory, principles, and practices of speech-language pathology. The SLP will be proficient in the ability to use a variety of computer programs and applications (i.e. Google, MS Word, Touch Chat, Boardmaker, Maryland Online IEP program, etc.) The SLP will possess a basic level sign language skills with the willingness to improve ASL skills to achieve fluency.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Must be willing to learn and continuously improve American Sign Language (ASL).

Must possess and maintain certification through the American Speech-Language Hearing Association.

Must take initiative to remain current in clinical practice through lectures, literature, and other continuing educational opportunities.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Candidates for this position must possess or be qualified to receive a current license from the Maryland State Board of Examiners for Speech-Language Pathologists, 4201 Patterson Avenue, Baltimore, Maryland 21215. A Maryland license must be obtained before this candidate can start employment at Maryland School for the Deaf.

Employees in this class must renew their license in accordance with Title 19, Speech-Language Pathology, Health Occupations Article, and Annotated Code of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

New hires are subject to a criminal background investigation at their own expense.  (Maryland Code, Family Law Article 1, Sections 5-560-568)

Candidates will need to provide three letters of recommendation with their application.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a contractual employee at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
