POSITION DUTIES

General Purpose: The Senior Press Secretary will work closely with members of the Governor’s Office of Communications to draft briefing materials, releases, advisories, and talking points for the governor, while maintaining relationships with the state press corps.

Responsibilities:
  • Lead the creation and execution of a comprehensive media relations strategy 
  • Communicate and maintain relationships with reporters, send statements, shape stories 
  • Draft and edit press releases, advisories, talking points, and other briefing materials 
  • Develop both short- and long-term stories that articulate what the administration is doing on behalf of Marylanders 
  • Collaborate with other members of the Office of Communications, deputy chiefs of staff, legislative office, state departments/agencies, and others 
  • Staff the governor at events and interviews 
  • Other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • A Bachelor’s Degree plus at least 6 years of prior media engagement experience, preferably in a government, political, or campaign environment. 
  • Ability to keep up with the 24 hour news cycle. 
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and execute tasks on tight deadlines. 
  • Ability to write and edit documents with precision. 
  • A clear understanding of politics and the national media environment. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills. 
  • Strong organizational skills and strict attention to details.
