Introduction

The Maryland Department of Commerce is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Maryland Traditions Program Director/State Folklorist within the Maryland State Arts Council (MSAC).

This is a Special Appointment position, and serves at the pleasure of the Appointing Authority.

Main Purpose of Job

This position is primarily responsible for providing grants administration and management of media and archival activities for Maryland Traditions, the traditional arts program of MSAC. The Maryland Traditions Program Director/State Folklorist directs all aspects of the Folklife Network, Folklife Apprenticeship, and Heritage Award grant programs, as assigned by the Deputy Director.

POSITION DUTIES

This position works with traditional arts grantees to identify and disseminate success stories and facilitate communication among traditional arts grantees.  Other duties include: acting as liaison between MSAC and the Maryland Traditions Archives, housed at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC);  providing oversight and consultation on all traditional arts archival activities to ensure alignment with the MSAC Strategic Plan; creating and overseeing the publication of digital traditional arts content online; monitoring regional folklife center performance to ensure Folklife Network purposes and goals are being fulfilled locally; advise stakeholders on the best practices; gathers feedback; and manages Maryland Traditions outreach activities.

The selected employee will possess excellent interpersonal skills to work with high level public and private sector officials and maintain effective working relationships; excellent written and oral communication skills; ability to work independently; handle multiple, concurrent, and high priority projects; experience in managing digital assets, use of interactive media applications and digital content management, and archival processing;  administration of grants, contracts, and/or public programs.  

Statewide travel required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Four years of administrative staff or professional work. 

Notes: 
 1. Candidates may substitute 30 college credit hours from an accredited college or university for each year up to four years of the required experience. 
 2. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Folklore Studies, Ethnomusicology, History, Cultural Anthropology, Library Science or related field for the required experience. 
 3. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Master's degree from an accredited college or university for the required experience. 
 4. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer involving staff work related to the administration of rules, regulations, policy, procedures and processes, or overseeing or coordinating unit operations or functioning as a staff assistant to a higher ranking commissioned officer on a year-for- year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to applicants who possess the following preferred qualification(s). Include clear and specific information on your application regarding your qualifications.

1.At least three (3) years of administrative staff or professional work experience must have involved one or more of the following areas: folklore studies, ethnomusicology, history, cultural anthropology, library science, communications or related areas.

2. Advanced degree in one of the fields named above is highly preferred.

3. Experience with supporting cultural documentation or presentation. 

4. Proficiency with Google Suite Google Mail, Docs, Sheets, Slides, and/or other relevant software.
 
5. Experience with archival management.

6. Experience in administration of grants, contract, and/or public programs and projects.

7. Experience in facilitating communications among multiple grantees or other stakeholders.
