Introduction

The Maryland Department of Labor, (Labor), Division of Workforce Development & Adult Learning - Correctional Education unit is accepting applications from qualified candidates for the position of Teacher Advanced Professional Certificate - Academic Teacher. This recruitment will be used to fill current and future vacancies. The resulting eligible list will be maintained for one year after the closing date of the announcement.

Main Purpose of Job

To create a classroom learning environment in which assigned inmate students makes measurable progress towards identified education goals as indicated by the successful completion of the requirements for the Maryland Adult Basic Literacy and Life Skills Certificate and/or the high school diploma. To maintain school operations in the absence of the principal and to assist the principal in areas of school accountability and management.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:   Possession of appropriate educational credentials as determined by the Maryland State Board of Education.

Experience: None.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to applicants who possess the following preferred qualification(s). Include clear and specific information on your application regarding your qualifications.
1. Experience teaching in Adult Education
2. Experience teaching diverse populations
3. Strong communication and interpersonal skills

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Teachers in State operated school programs are required to acquire and maintain certification to teach in the State of Maryland per Education Article, Section 6-101 of the Annotated Code and Code of Maryland Regulations (COMAR) 13A.12.01.03B(2). Applicants recommended for appointment will be required to complete an Authorization and Verification of Credentials. Information on requirements for certification and procedures for application may be obtained from the Maryland State Board of Education, 200 W. Baltimore Street, Baltimore, MD 21201-2595.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

All candidates are subject to a background check against files maintained by the Division of Unemployment Insurance (Labor/DUI) to determine whether any monies are owed to Labor/DUI as a result of unemployment insurance overpayment/fraud. Any unpaid debt may have an impact on whether or not a candidate is offered employment.

Any job offer will be contingent on the candidate providing a U.S. Military form DD 214 verifying honorable discharge from service prior to starting employment (and may be requested prior to interview). Permanent State employees do not need to submit proof of Veterans’ status.
