Introduction

This is an 11 month, school year position.  Nurses do not work when school is closed during winter break, spring break, and during the summer months.  The salary range reflects the 11 month work schedule.

This is a 2nd Shift position.

Main Purpose of Job

To provide health care for students in a residential setting, and to act as health care liaison between parents and school.

POSITION DUTIES

I. Assessment, evaluation, and monitoring of students’ current medical and emotional health status.
a. Identify appropriate action using accepted nursing judgment, when a student enters the health center.
b. Identify health/ nursing needs of students and offer treatment using guidelines of physician standing orders.
c. Process and track incoming required annual student health forms for chronic management diseases/conditions. d. Develop, write, implement and evaluate the effectiveness of care plans for students with specific medical conditions.
e. Monitor and observe any changes in student’s condition.
f. Coordinate emergency care of students: i.e., notify ambulance, parents, hospital, family service specialist and administration.
g. Contact pediatrician or health care provider for consultation for various illnesses.
h. Monitor and follow up with parents/guardians on vaccine requirements as required by state law.
i. Teach preventive health care and personal hygiene to students.
j. Daily screening of staff, students, or others coming to school/dorm during COVID-19 pandemic until further notification.
k. Provide virtual office hours as applicable.
l. Follow the current public health guidance regarding exclusion and isolation protocols for students and staff who present at school with acute symptoms of illness.

II. Maintain accurate and adequate records of nursing care, observations, and treatments according to established procedures.
a. Document students’ visits to health center on daily log and in students’ charts.
b. Implement the use of PowerSchool for nursing documentation. 
c. Organize, compile, and maintain students’ charts at each health center.
d. Send and receive communications with parents: i.e. notice of health center visits, requests for medication refills, requests for updates of medical records, information regarding contagious illnesses occurring at school via email, iPhone/text, Videophone, etc.
e. Chart heights, weights, blood pressures, vision and scoliosis screening
f. Maintains records of student immunizations in student chart and PowerSchool.
g. Maintain monthly medication sheets.
h. Daily filing of student health information/nursing documentation.
i. Communicate report from shift to oncoming nurse.

III. Administer medications (via oral, topical, inhalation and injection) as prescribed for medical conditions or injuries.
a. Schedule time for administration of medication and dispense accordingly.
b. Receive and log in medication sent from home and send medication back home as needed.
c. Chart all medication when given.
d. Evaluate and document the effectiveness of PRN medications.
e. Record expiration dates and discard medication appropriately.

IV. Maintain student health center facility.
a. Maintain cleanliness of the student health center for infection control using MOSHA standards.
b. Maintain equipment and replenish supplies.
c. Maintain inventory of supplies and equipment.
d. Clean equipment.
e. Launder soiled linen and clothes.

V. Provide auxiliary duties as needed.
a. Attend student activities and athletic events when necessary.
b. Supply first aid kits for classroom and dorm.
c. Assist with coordinating pre-registration packets that are sent home in the summer.
d. First aid treatment of staff as needed.
e. Administer Hep B vaccines to pertinent employees per OSHA regulations.
f. Provide TB skin testing for pertinent employees per DHR regulations.
g. Assists direct dorm care staff with identifying health problems or hazards.
h. Check to make sure the dorm attendance sheet is completed.
i. Make rounds as needed.
j. Maintain open communication between nurse, dorm supervisor and staff.
k. Maintain communication with dorm staff concerning security or maintenance issues.
l. Complete yearly mandatory online training (i.e. KnowB4).
m. Maintain current RN licensure.
n. Maintain current CPR for Healthcare Providers Certification.
o. Completed other tasks when delegated.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Determined by the Maryland State Board of Nursing under the licensing requirements for Registered Nurses.

Experience: None.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

One year of School nursing experience and sign language skills preferred.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. Candidates for positions in this classification must possess a current license as a Registered Nurse from the Maryland State Board of Nursing, 4140 Patterson Avenue, Baltimore, Maryland 21215 or possess a current multi-state license in party states that candidates have declared as primary states of residence.

2. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of an automobile. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

3. Employees in this classification may be required to successfully complete cardiopulmonary resuscitation training and maintain current certification.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Employees in this classification are subject to call-in and, therefore, will be required to provide the facility with a phone number at which they can be reached.

2. Employees in the classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with the Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.

3. Candidates must be willing to learn American Sign Language and become conversational within two years.

4. New hires are subject to a criminal background investigation at their own expense (Maryland Code, Family Law Article 1, Sections 5-560 – 5-568)

5. Candidates will need to provide three letters of recommendation.
