Main Purpose of Job

These school Based Literacy Coach positions will serve in elementary schools located throughout Prince Georges County. These positions will be responsible for supporting literacy initiatives by ensuring all PreK–3 students receive high-quality, standards-aligned literacy instruction. Coaches will provide job-embedded coaching and professional learning for K-3 teachers, grounded in the Science of Reading and using High-Quality Instructional Materials (HQIM). The coach supports teacher growth and builds instructional capacity across their assigned school, with the goal of improving PreK- 3 literacy outcomes.

POSITION DUTIES

Plans and facilitates professional learning cycles and leads teachers through individual Coaching Cycles aligned to Professional Learning Goals
  • Provides non-evaluative support aligned to the Science of Reading, equipping teachers with skills and confidence needed for standard-aligned literacy instruction.
  • Leads professional learning focused on HQIM, the Science of Reading, and research-based instructional practices.
  • Conducts non-evaluative coaching cycles that include co-planning, modeling/co-teaching lessons or elbow coaching, classroom observations, and feedback conversations to strengthen teachers’ instructional practice. 
  • Analyzes student and teacher data to establish targeted goals, ensuring coaching cycles are aligned with statewide literacy priorities.
  • Provides differentiated support (general, moderate, and intensive) based on student and teacher needs. 
  • Regularly collects data using the MSDE measurement tools. 
  • Connects each coaching cycle to professional learning content, ensuring teachers apply strategies from professional learning sessions directly to their classrooms.
  • Designs and facilitate recurring professional learning cycles grounded in the Science of Reading, lesson internalization using high-quality instructional materials (HQIM) and aligned to identified literacy priorities from the MSDE measurement tools. 
  • Structures ongoing professional learning cycles according to the MSDE coaching model.
  • Leads weekly/bi-weekly collaborative planning sessions that allow teachers to plan and practice instructional strategies, analyze student work, and reflect on teaching practices.
  • Integrates research-based practices into professional learning sessions to ensure coherence between professional learning, coaching feedback and classroom instruction.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:   A Master’s degree or the equivalent of 36 credit hours of post-baccalaureate course work from an accredited college or university.

Experience: Four years of administrative or teaching experience in, or affiliated with Literacy, Reading and/or related programs in prekindergarten through 12 settings. A minimum of one year of this experience must include supervising and/or coaching professional education staff. 

Notes: 
  1. Candidates may substitute two additional years of experience directly related to the position option for the required education. 
  2. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Doctorate degree from an accredited college or university in a field related to the position option for one year of the required experience. 
  3. The required field of education and experience are unique for each option and are established by MSDE in accordance with Education Article, Section 2-104 of the Annotated Code of Maryland.  The specific education and experience qualifications for each position are on record in the Human Resource Management Branch of the Division of Business Services.
  4. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Education Program classifications or Education Program specialty codes in the Education field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

1 year of experience affiliated with a PreK -3 literacy program.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to applicants who possess the following preferred qualification(s). Include clear and specific information on your application regarding your qualifications.

  • Active teacher certification in any state with experience as a classroom teacher.
  • Knowledge of the Science of Reading, Structured Literacy and associated HQIM.
  • Knowledge of the Maryland College and Career Ready Standards and the Maryland Comprehensive Literacy Plan.
  • Knowledge of curriculum and evidence-based instructional practices in English Language Arts and literacy. 
  • Knowledge of professional learning cycles and the MSDE coaching model.
  • Knowledge of PreK-3 learning theory and various approaches to instructional coaching.
  • Skill in high-impact coaching methods.
  • Skill in delivering data-driven literacy instruction that meets the needs of diverse learners.
  • Skill developing and facilitating professional learning focused on research-based practices and evidence-based interventions. 
  • Skill providing professional development and coaching to educators and/or administrators.
  • Ability to engage with teachers and administrators to strengthen literacy practices.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced State or large district led initiative focused on increasing reading outcomes.

LIMITATIONS ON SELECTION

Applicants must be a current Local School System employee.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must consent to State and FBI (CJIS) background check as a routine procedure for all employees.

These positions require travel throughout Prince Georges County to support teachers within individual school(s) and oversee the effective implementation of Literacy initiatives.
