Main Purpose of Job
The main purpose of this position is to coordinate and conduct land management activities,
wildlife surveys, and monitor public use on Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs) including
assisting in the development and implementation of area objectives to achieve statewide goals
for the management of assigned WMAs and other DNR lands under the supervision of the
Habitat Manager. As such, this position requires knowledge of land management practices,
basic biological analysis, project coordination, and evaluation of a variety of wildlife
management techniques. This position will supervise other Natural Resource Technicians
assigned to the land management program within the assigned area.
This position requires knowledge of land management practices, farming equipment
maintenance/repair/use, basic wildlife species identification, vehicle maintenance/repair/use,
and the application of standard wildlife management techniques. The employee is expected to
provide technical assistance to other DNR units.
The position is also responsible for frequent interaction with the public to inform them of
public land opportunities, resolve routine wildlife problems and direct them to appropriate
contacts within WHS and other agencies.
This position is also expected to respond to black bear and other nuisance wildlife
complaints, and emergencies in accordance with the Wildlife Emergency Response Plan and
Black Bear Response Plan protocols. Responds to injured deer and other wildlife
emergencies that may pose risks to the public or wildlife species of concern. Acts as Unit
representative at wildlife emergencies. Performs as lead at wildlife emergencies and directs
other emergency personnel, including State Police, Sheriff’s Office, NR Police and other
persons on site.
POSITION DUTIES
The Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife and Heritage Service is seeking interested candidates for a Natural Resources Technician, Area Manager position. This is position based out of the Wildlife and Heritage Service Indian Springs Work Center located in Clear Spring, MD. The main purpose of this position is to coordinate and conduct land management activities, wildlife surveys, and monitor public use on Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs) under the supervision of the Habitat Manager. As such, this position requires knowledge of land management practices, basic biological analysis, project coordination, and evaluation of a variety of wildlife management techniques. This position will supervise other Natural Resource Technicians assigned to the land management program within the assigned area. The employee will also respond to and resolve human-wildlife conflicts and emergencies both during normal business hours and after-hours when needed within the work areas of Frederick and Washington Counties.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Experience: Five years of experience, three years of experience in technical biological work in the field of natural resources management and an additional two years of experience performing technical biological work in the field of forestry, arboriculture, wildlife, aquaculture, natural resources management, or fisheries.

1. Candidates may substitute the completion of 60 credit hours from an accredited college or university, 18 credit hours must be in biology, biochemistry, environmental science, forest technology, arboriculture, aquaculture, natural science, natural resources management, botany, marine biology, marine ecology, physical oceanography, ichthyology, fisheries management, wildlife management, zoology, or a natural resources management related field of study and three years of experience in technical biological work in the field of natural resources management for the required experience.
2. Candidates may substitute additional education beyond the 60 credit hours from an accredited college or university in a natural resources related field of study on a year-for-year basis for up to two years of the required experience.
3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in the natural resources management and biological sciences classifications or natural resources management and biological sciences specialty codes in the biological science technician field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required education.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Possession of a bachelor’s degree in wildlife management, biology, natural science, natural resources management, botany, or zoology from an accredited college or university.
- At least three years of experience operating farm equipment, heavy equipment, and power tools for the purposes of habitat management and facility maintenance.
- At least one year of experience in responding to and handling nuisance wildlife complaints and emergencies.

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of an automobile or other motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess the appropriate operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
