POSITION DUTIES

This position learns to oversee the transfer of records into the custody of the State Archives, particularly for digital records. This position learns to provide outreach and guidance on records management issues, including appraising government records to identify, transfer, and describe records with permanent value. This position learns to improve the organization, description, and accessibility of records in Archives custody, particularly for digital records. This position also has tasks related to the appropriate shielding of digital records in accordance with applicable laws. This position monitors general condition of archival holdings, environmental conditions, physical plant status and conditions; appropriately maintains area, takes appropriate corrective action and/or reports issues to higher level Archivists for corrective action. This job is vital to the Archives' mission to acquire, describe, preserve and make available permanent Maryland records. Job Duties:
 
Learns to provide the public and government officials with guidance on records management issues and record access assistance 

Learns to appraise records for their permanent value; review record documentation and recommend revisions to ensure records are adequately described and retained. 

Learns to investigate and document the nature of records in order to increase the Archives' understanding of records. Helps to improve the Archives' record holdings by reviewing and improving how records are stored, described, and accessed. 

Assists with the management of the Archives' digital holdings. This may include records appraisal, harvesting, processing, shielding and upload. This may also include using or assisting others with the use of digital record software.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Four years of experience in professional archival work with public records.

Notes:

1.  Candidates may substitute academic credit from an accredited college or university at the rate of thirty credit hours for each year for the required experience.

2.  Candidates may substitute two years of experience in the Archival Assistant series classification for required education and experience.   

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Archivist classifications or Archivist specialty codes in the Library and Archives field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

1.  Previous experience working in digital records management or in archival setting 
2.  Previous experience appraising government records 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Employees may be required to lift up to 50 pounds when record shipments arrive and climb ladders.  Employees in this classification must exercise caution during the retrieval and replacement of heavy volumes from library shelves, particularly when using library ladders.  Employees may work a rotating shift and may be required to work Saturdays.
