Introduction

The Maryland Department of Veterans and Military Families (DVMF) was created by the State Legislature in 1999 as an executive agency with the mission of assisting veterans, active duty service members, their families and dependents, in securing benefits earned through military service.

Under the Department of Veterans and Military Families are five major programs: 

  • Service and Benefits Program 
  • Charlotte Hall Veterans Home 
  • Cemetery and Memorial Program Communications, Outreach, & Advocacy Program’s  
  • Maryland Veterans Trust Fund

POSITION DUTIES

The Veterans Cemetery Superintendents role is to supervise, manage and coordinate the day-to-day activities of a Maryland State Veterans Cemetery. This includes all aspects of administration/personnel, cemetery operations, facility management, grounds management, resource management, strategic planning, policy and procedure development, special projects and other duties as assigned. The Superintendent makes sure that the Departments mission to provide the best services and perpetual care of burial sites is accomplished.

Position duties include but are not limited to:

  • Cemetery Operations- Schedules and organizes arrangements for the interments, re-interments and disinterment eligibility, such as military documentation and Maryland Residency Requirements.
  • Grounds and Facility Maintenance- Develops and directs work duties for employees.
  • Administrative Duties- Makes prompt preparation of records of interments as well as all pertinent information concerning equipment. 
  • Public Relations- Interacts with the public, funeral director personnel, veteran eligibility, cemetery policy and procedure, and to resolve complaints.
  • Personnel- Handles all aspects of cemetery personnel. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:   Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Two years of operations management experience in cemetery operations, national or State park operations, golf course management, grounds maintenance, or construction; or two years of operations management experience in customer service, retail or hospitality.  Operations management experience must include two or more of the following responsibilities:  supervision of staff, public relations, project management, vendor management, equipment and facilities maintenance management, or inventory management.  

Notes:  

1. Candidates may substitute additional experience as defined above on a year-for-year basis for the required education. 

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience at the rank of Corporal/Petty Officer or higher as a non-commissioned officer in general maintenance classifications or cemetery caretaking specialty codes in the general maintenance field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

LIMITATIONS ON SELECTION

This position is open to current employees of the Department of Veterans and Military Families only.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Employees in this classification may be subject to call-in 24 hours a day and may be required to provide the employing agency with a telephone number where they can be reached.
