Main Purpose of Job
The primary function of this position is to assist the Maryland Park Service’s Historic
Planner/Historian with historical resource planning, management and interpretation. The MPS
manages the most historical resources of any agency within the State. This position will help the
historian plan, organize and manage efforts related to historical resource preservation, restoration,
management and interpretation. This position shall work with the historian to develop and direct
the establishment of a statewide Maryland Park Service historical resource database to track and
update documentation on various resources throughout the state. The position will work with
Headquarters staff and with field personnel to identify needs for historical interpretation and
restoration, including the development of historical or cultural resource component in Park’s
Strategic Management Plans. The position will work with field staff and the historian to ensure
that cultural and historical resources at parks are presented accurately on each park’s website and
to ensure that historical features are highlighted alongside recreational and natural resource
aspects at our parks. The position will work with field staff, experts and the historian to establish
an agency collections policy and standards and oversee its implementation. The position will
work with field staff and the historian to seek and apply for grant opportunities. The historic
planners will work with the Chief of Interpretation and historian to upgrade and improve visitor
center exhibits and displays.
POSITION DUTIES
The Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Maryland Park Service, is currently accepting applications for two Administrator I positions. The incumbents will assist the Maryland Park Service’s Historic Planner/Historian with historical resource preservation, restoration, management and interpretation. These positions work with park staff to ensure that historical features are highlighted alongside recreational and natural resource aspects of Maryland’s State Parks.
The selected candidates will assist with the establishment of a statewide historical resource database to track historic resources and help develop an agency-wide collections standards policy, ensuring those resources are adequately identified on the agency websites, and are adequately interpreted on public lands via signage, museum/visitor center exhibits, and/or interpretive programming. These positions provide technical and logistical support to the Park Service historian, agency leadership and field staff regarding historic structures and resources, suggest courses of actions that would be sustainable, financially feasible and comply with statewide historic preservation requirements.
The selected candidates will coordinate and support the process of project review for historic projects on Maryland Park Service lands with internal DNR units, other state agencies, federal agencies and non-state entities. Duties also include the management and development, design, production and fabrication of major historic-themed Park Service interpretive exhibits, wayside projects, signs and publications.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
Experience: Four years of administrative staff or professional work.

1. Candidates may substitute 30 college credit hours from an accredited college or university for each year up to four years of the required experience.
2. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university for the required experience.
3. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Master's degree from an accredited college or university for the required experience.
4. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer involving staff work related to the administration of rules, regulations, policy, procedures and processes, or overseeing or coordinating unit operations or functioning as a staff assistant to a higher ranking commissioned officer on a year-for- year basis for the required experience.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated education and experience meeting the following desired or preferred qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in architectural history, American history, American studies, anthropology, archaeology, historic preservation, history, museum studies, public history, cultural resources management, planning, or closely related field.
- Two years or more full-time experience working in the fields of historic preservation, archaeology, historic research and writing, or historic interpretation in a park, historic site, archive, museum, historical society, or in association with an accredited academic institution.
- Experience or training in conducting historic preservation and research fieldwork that includes at least one of the following areas: documenting historic sites, structures and landscapes, managing and maintaining historic artifacts and collections, writing and publishing historic research, or review and compliance with historic preservation standards.
- Excellent communication and administrative skills (verbal and written).
- Comfortable with field visits outdoors in all weather conditions, on site visits to remote and rural areas over sometimes difficult terrain.
- Possesses training and experience in relevant computer-based programs, including (but not limited to) MicroSoft (MS) Office Suite, Adobe products, Google products and systems, desktop publishing programs such as InDesign, MS Publisher or Canva, computer-aided design programs, global positional systems such as ArcGIS /ArcGISPro, or database systems such as MS Excel, PastPerfect, SQL etc.

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
