Introduction

The office plans, promotes, and funds efforts with government entities, private organizations, and the community to advance public policy, enhance public safety, reduce crime and juvenile delinquency, and serve victims.

Main Purpose of Job

The primary purpose of this position is to provide direct administrative and clerical support to the Maryland Criminal Injuries Compensation Board (CICB) within the Governor’s Office of Crime Prevention & Policy. This position is integral to support crime victims and their families by facilitating timely and accurate claim processing. It involves public-facing duties such as assisting claimants, data entry, and telephone communication, as well as backend administrative support for Claims Examiners and other staff. The role directly contributes to the agency’s mission of advancing victim services and ensuring equitable access to compensation for crime victims across the State of Maryland.

POSITION DUTIES

- Customer Service Support: Serves as the first point of contact for most external customers. Assists Walk-In Claimants, as well as those contacting the agency via other means, with completing applications, explaining eligibility requirements, and reviewing claim applications for completeness prior to submitting. Answers the primary CICB telephone lines and directs the calls accordingly. Locates, completes, and mails appropriate letters and related correspondence to service providers and crime victims.

- Administrative Support: Enters all new applications and accompanying documents into the Agency’s Database. Provides data processing support to the Claims Examiners. Send faxes, emails, or scan materials to internal and external stakeholders, service providers, claims examiners, as well as supervisor(s).

- Victim Expertise: Acquires and maintains an acceptable level of competency in victims’ rights knowledge, cultural and diversity awareness and other areas as designated by supervisors.

- Other administrative duties as assigned to support the efficient processing of victim compensation claims.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Four years performing secretarial work or clerical work involving typing duties.

Notes:

1. Additional secretarial or clerical experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

2. Thirty credit hours with a major in secretarial science or office technology from an accredited college may be substituted at the rate of thirty credits for one year of experience for up to two years of the required experience.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Administration classifications or Administrative, Clerical, or Office Services specialty codes in the Administrative Support field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

- Ability and experience speaking and interpreting formal Spanish fluently.
- Multi-line telephone experience
- Intermediate level computer skills (Preferred Microsoft Office Suite, Word, Excel & PowerPoint)

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Demonstrated ability to accurately type on a keyboard on a personal computer at a minimum of forty words per minute may be required, depending on the specific requirements of the position.

BENEFITS

Leave
Paid leave will accrue at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked.
