Main Purpose of Job

This supervisory position reviews and issues septic system drawings for commercial and residential projects. This position coordinates with MDE representatives to co-review innovative septic designs. This position will conduct meetings with MDE representatives for well variances and on-site visits, conduct soil evaluations and percolation testing for the creation of new commercial properties and the repair of failed septic systems, and inspect the installation of new septic systems and the repair of existing septic systems for residential and commercial properties to ensure the septic systems comply with the Code of Maryland and the Frederick County Health Department guidelines. This position will attend active well grouts and yields to ensure compliance with COMAR, assist sanitarians with septic repairs, and train in soil descriptions and workload as needed. Additionally, this position supervises, trains, and evaluates sanitarians to enhance their job performance and professional growth. This position will also develop and maintain position descriptions and evaluate staff by establishing job duties and performance standards, evaluate the quality and quantity of work done by sanitarians, and conduct investigations of complaints handled by the Well & Septic Branch.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:   Determined by the Maryland Board of Environmental Health Specialists under the licensing requirements for Environmental Health Specialists.

Experience: Two years of experience performing inspections and investigations to ensure compliance with environmental health laws and regulations.

Notes:

1.  Candidates may substitute possession of a Master of Public Health or Master of Science degree from an accredited college or university for one year of the required experience.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Environmental Engineering classifications or Environmental Engineering specialty codes in the Engineering and Natural Resources field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. Candidates for positions in this classification must possess and maintain a current license as a Registered Environmental Health Specialist from the Maryland Board of Environmental Health Specialists.

2. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
