Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of this position is to develop the knowledge, skills and competencies (job-related instructions) necessary to perform successfully as an Environmental Health Specialist in a local health department. The position will involve academic coursework and various duties within the Department, supporting the apprentice in becoming familiar with both normal and emergency public health operations. This job-related instruction will also prepare the apprentice to meet the requirements for the licensing examination of the Maryland Board of Environmental Health Specialists.  Successful completion of the Apprenticeship also leads to a position in a local health department, with a service obligation equal to the time spent in training.

Entrance Criteria for the Apprenticeship:

To qualify for the Environmental Health Specialist Apprenticeship Program, applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria:

1. Age Requirement:
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
2. Academic Requirements:
  • Must have completed a minimum of 60 college credits, preferably in public health, environmental science, biology, or a related field.
  • Must meet the Board of Environmental Health Specialists' academic criteria. 
3. Knowledge:
  • Proficiency in English, basic arithmetic, and grammar. 
  • Understanding of public and environmental health concepts (soil, water, air, and food science).
  • Familiarity with Maryland’s political and legal structures relevant to public health.
4. Skills:
  • Ability to prepare and present findings and reports.
  • Experience or demonstrated potential to conduct investigations and communicate with diverse audiences.
5. Abilities: 
  • Ability to interpret and apply environmental health regulations. 
  • Physical ability to perform field duties (e.g., stooping, PPE use, walking on uneven surfaces).
  • Adaptability to learn and follow safety protocols and procedures. 
6. Work and Training Commitment:
  • Willingness to complete a two-year apprenticeship that includes on-the-job training and academic coursework at Morgan State University.
  • Must be able to work part-time or full-time at MDH while enrolled in coursework. 
7. Driver’s License:
  • A valid driver’s license is required due to travel needs for fieldwork. 
8. Cultural Competency and Professional Standards:
  • Must be able to communicate respectfully and effectively with diverse populations. 
  • Must adhere to safety protocols and infection control standards.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:   Minimum of 2 years of college experience (60 credits) or an Associates degree; must meet the entrance criteria for the Apprenticeship.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The desired candidate should possess the following:

1. Undergraduate work with coursework in environmental science, public health, biology or a related field.

2. Experience performing duties under supervision, such as conducting site visits, observing and assisting with environmental inspections, collecting field samples, documenting findings and participating in outreach or education activities.

3. Willingness to undergo regular progress reviews and submit training logs and completion of academic coursework required for licensure as a Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS/RS).

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
