Introduction

The Maryland Department of Agriculture is a department under Maryland's Executive Branch.  Formed in 1972 by the Maryland General Assembly to address the agriculture needs for the State of Maryland, the Department oversees and serves as a regulatory body for animal health , consumer services to include marketing and lab services, plant and pest management and resource conservation.  As the number one industry in Maryland, the diversity of agriculture programs in the State continue to expand and grow 

The primary goal of the PLANT PROTECTION and WEED MANAGEMENT SECTION is to conduct regulatory inspections and provide educational programs to the public and our partners on ways to protect the health of plants and honey bees in Maryland.

1 opening in Central Region of Maryland (Prince George's, Montgomery, Howard counties)

1 opening in Upper Eastern Shore (Caroline, Queen Anne's, Talbot counties)

1 opening in Lower Eastern Shore (Dorchester, Wicomico, Worcester counties)

This is seasonal work with variable hours, approximately 200 hours per season.  Contractual employees are paid for actual hours worked only.  Mileage will be reimbursed at the State of Maryland reimbursement rate (currently .70 cents per mile, subject to change) when traveling within your assigned region. 

This is contractual employment and does not include benefits such as leave time, holidays, or health insurance.

LOCATION OF POSITION

Maryland Department of Agriculture Headquarters - Annapolis, Maryland

Mileage will be reimbursed at the State of Maryland reimbursement rate (currently .70 cents per mile, subject to change). In addition to conducting inspections in the assigned region, will occasionally make routine trips to headquarters in Annapolis for training, meetings and other purposes determined by the program.

Main Purpose of Job

The Maryland Department of Agriculture is seeking a seasonal field technician to work as an apiary inspector. This is a part-time position (approximately 200 hours for the season) with duties within these counties of Maryland.

POSITION DUTIES

Duties will include inspection of honeybee colonies for diseases, pests, and pesticide losses, recommendations of appropriate measures for honeybee colony management and control of honey bee pests and diseases, accurate record keeping/office work as required to document inspection actions and assist with licensing activities. Work will involve interactions with the public, Work will involve exposure to biting/stinging insects, ticks, poison ivy, high temperature and humidity and other outdoors exposure. Employees may be required to use personal protective equipment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: A minimum of three years of successful, progressively responsible experience in a practical beekeeping program or in beekeeping inspection is required.

Education: High School Diploma or GED

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to applicants who possess the following preferred qualification(s). Include clear and specific information on your application regarding your qualifications.

Candidates with five or more years of successful, progressively responsible experience in a practical beekeeping program or in beekeeping inspection will be given preference.
