Main Purpose of Job
The Maryland Department of Natural Resources Fishing and Boating Services (FABS) is
accepting applications for two seasonal/contractual Natural Resources Technician I positions. These positions
will support the Freshwater Fisheries and Hatcheries Division . The assigned work location for these positions
will be Joseph Manning Fish Hatchery in Brandywine, MD. Occasional overtime and weekend work may be
required.
Each 8-month position will assist in the FABS Anadromous Restoration program, American shad gill netting
project. Work hours are dependent on tide; generally, an eight-hour day is worked between 3:00pm to
12:00am. Work will take place Sunday through Friday. Applicants will assist gill netting on the Potomac
River. The positions will also support all aspects of hatchery operations.
POSITION DUTIES
- Pond water quality monitoring
- Juvenile fish recruitment/inventory/stocking
- Pond, building, equipment and vehicle maintenance
- Grass cutting, weed eating, general grounds maintenance and trash removal
- Maintenance and the deployment of gill nets from a boat
- Removing American Shad and other fish species from gill nets
- Strip spawning American Shad
- Assisting in data collection
- Providing assistance to other division projects and other duties as assigned
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Experience: Two years of experience performing technical biological work in the field of forestry, arboriculture,
wildlife, aquaculture, natural resources management, or fisheries.
Notes:
1. Candidates may substitute the completion of 60 credit hours from an accredited college or university, 18 credit
hours must be in biology, biochemistry, environmental science, forest technology, arboriculture, aquaculture,
natural science, natural resources management, botany, marine biology, marine ecology, physical oceanography,
ichthyology, fisheries management, wildlife management, zoology, or a natural resources management related field
of study for the required experience.
2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in the
natural resources management and biological sciences classifications or natural resources management and
biological sciences specialty codes in the biological science technician field of work on a year-for-year basis for the
required experience.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Preference will be given to applicants with prior fisheries experience, using sampling equipment (trawl, seines, etc.), and laboratory experience with microscopes.

BENEFITS
Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.
Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
