Introduction

The Maryland State Retirement Agency is the administrator of the Maryland State Retirement and Pension System (System). The System is a defined benefit retirement system covering governmental employees within the State of Maryland. The System is composed of twelve (12) separate retirement and pension systems with over 50 different rule sets. The System has over 397,000 participants (customers), including 192,000 members who are actively employed and participating in the System, 165,000 payees who receive a monthly payment from the System, and 40,000 vested members who are no longer actively employed but have earned a benefit that will become payable at a future date.

The agency is seeking to fill an Administrative Specialist III position in the Benefits Processing Unit. During the probationary period, this position will work 100% at the office of the Maryland State Retirement Agency. After the probationary/training period, and at the discretion of the Unit Director, this position may be eligible to telework one day per pay period.

Main Purpose of Job

This position serves as an administrative specialist in the operations of the Retirement Processing Unit. Primary responsibilities include preparation and review of various estimate worksheets, Customer Relationship Management (CRM) cases, salary audits via CRM cases, preparing correspondence to return deficient forms, and various functions related to facilitating the processing of estimates and retirement applications. Timely and accurate processing of transactions related to these processes are essential elements in aiding the Agency in meeting the objective of our Mission Statement. Which is to effectively communicate to both participants and employers the information regarding benefits provided by the system.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Two years of experience performing administrative staff, clerical, clerical technical, or secretarial work. 

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute 30 college credit hours from an accredited college or university for each year of the required experience.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer involving staff work requiring regular use of independent judgment and analysis in applying and interpreting rules and regulations in accordance with agency laws and policies on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

At least one year of experience in using Microsoft Office suite of products (Word, Excel, Outlook).
At least one year of experience reviewing retirement/employee benefits documents for accuracy.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.
