Main Purpose of Job

The primary objective of the Wireless Communications Unit Contractual Employee is to support the Wireless Communications Unit (WCU) in maintaining and enhancing wireless communication systems within the state. This role is integral to the agency's mission, which focuses on ensuring efficient and reliable communication channels, especially in emergencies.

POSITION DUTIES

  1. Grounds Maintenance and Basic Equipment Repair: Undertake essential grounds maintenance duties and basic repairs of generators, ensuring operational efficiency. Perform routine maintenance tasks as required for Natural Resources Police (NRP) patrol vehicles and vessels.
  2. Basic Technical Support: Provide basic technical assistance related to equipment and systems used within the Natural Resources Police. Address general issues concerning equipment functionality to support continuous and reliable operation.
  3. Troubleshoot and Resolve Simple Technical Issues: Apply basic troubleshooting skills to identify and resolve straightforward technical problems with equipment. Focus on minimizing equipment downtime and maintaining essential operational capabilities.
  4. Support and Collaboration: Assist the lead technician or supervisor in coordinating tasks, receiving instructions, and reporting on the status of maintenance and repair activities. Contribute to maintaining open communication for effective task management.
  5. On-Call Duty for Emergencies: On-call schedule, as needed, to address urgent maintenance and repair issues that may arise, ensuring the continued functionality of essential equipment.
  6. Compliance with Basic Safety Standards: Follow established safety guidelines and basic regulatory standards while performing maintenance and repair tasks. Ensure that work is conducted in a safe and compliant manner.
  7. Basic Power Solutions Maintenance: Assist in maintaining basic power solutions, including generators and backup systems, to support uninterrupted operation during emergencies and power outages.
  8. Record-Keeping of Maintenance Activities: Keep accurate records of maintenance and repair activities. Complete necessary documentation in a timely and accurate manner, ensuring proper tracking of work performed.
  9. Continuous Learning: Engage in ongoing learning to improve skills related to grounds maintenance and basic equipment repair. Attend training sessions as required to enhance job-related knowledge and capabilities.
  10. Effective Teamwork: Collaborate effectively with team members to achieve shared objectives, ensuring smooth operations of the unit’s maintenance and repair activities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: One year of experience in maintenance and repair of communication equipment.  

Notes:
1. Candidates may substitute the successful completion of a program of study related to radio electronics at a recognized training school or trade school for the required experience. Transcripts or certificate(s) must be included for credit. 

2. Candidates may substitute 30 credit hours of undergraduate or graduate level experience in radio electronics or related for the required experience. Transcripts must be included for credit. 

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer involving work related to the installation or repair of communications, data equipment, or computer systems on a year-for-year basis for the required education and experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated experience in grounds maintenance and basic electrical/mechanical repairs.
  • Familiarity with generator, vehicle, and vessel maintenance procedures.
  • Basic understanding of communication equipment use.
  • Proven ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Strong organizational skills for accurate record-keeping.
  • Basic safety training relevant to maintenance and repair work.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Willingness to travel statewide as needed with a provided vehicle. This may include after hours travel and/or travel in inclement weather during an emergency. 
  • Eligible applicants will be subject to a background investigation.  A conviction is not an automatic disqualifier.  Erroneous, misleading, or fraudulent information on the application is sufficient grounds for rejection from the hiring process, removal from the eligible list, withdrawal of an offer of employment, or immediate discharge.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
