Introduction
This is a position specific recruitment for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife and Heritage. This recruitment will be used to fill current vacancies for the position and may be used to fill future vacancies in the same classification/function. Future vacancies may also be filled via other recruitments. The resulting eligible list will be maintained for one year.

Main Purpose of Job
To coordinate and conduct Wildlife Response activities in the Eastern Region. The position
is also responsible for the overall implementation of educational initiatives, technical
assistance programs, emergency wildlife response and wildlife monitoring surveys, as well as
assisting with land management work.
This position is responsible for the coordination and supervision of staff; the appropriate use
and control of firearms; the appropriate use and control of immobilization drugs/guns;
response/resolution of wildlife emergencies on a 24-hour a day basis; investigation/resolution
of wildlife disease outbreaks; completing scheduled wildlife surveys; capturing/handling
wildlife; response/resolution of animal damage complaints; conducting/assisting with
outreach events and providing information to the public.
POSITION DUTIES
- This position is responsible for the supervision of staff, and the coordination of multiple activities of rapidly changing priorities over a large geographic area.
- Supervise, coordinate, and evaluate all responsibilities delegated to regional Wildlife Response Technicians by providing written and verbal instructions, on-site supervision and follow-up as necessary. Provides input to the regional manager on legislation, regulations, policies and administrative decisions.
- Maintains Regional readiness for and responds to wildlife emergencies, ensuring regional staff are properly trained and equipped. Includes controlling/confiscating wildlife held illegally, or otherwise considered harmful.
- Coordinates regional efforts to manage crop damage from wildlife by working with local landowners and farmers, approving and denying permits, tracking permit use, and supervising staff who also issue permits.
- Coordinates completion of surveys, inventory and data collection and manages staff to ensure the proper completion of surveys, inventories and other data collection efforts.
- Assists land management staff with habitat conservation, maintenance, and recreation work on WMA’s and other lands.
- Coordinates and implements outreach efforts to help teach students about wildlife conservation through participation in local/regional education programs, outreach events, and participates in other similar programs statewide as needed.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Experience: Four years of professional experience conducting research and analysis in the fields of biology, biochemistry, environmental science, natural science, natural resources management, botany, marine biology, marine ecology, physical oceanography, ichthyology, fisheries management, wildlife management or zoology.

Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelor’s degree in biology,
environmental aquaculture, natural science, natural resources management,
botany, marine biology, marine ecology or physical oceanography, ichthyology,
fisheries management, wildlife management, zoology, or a natural resources
management related field of study from an accredited college or university for
the required experience.

Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a
commissioned officer in the natural resources management and biological
sciences classifications or natural resources management and biological
sciences specialty codes in the wildlife biology field of work on a
year-for-year basis for the required experience.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Two years of professional experience providing technical assistance to the public and responding to various wildlife issues.
- Two years of professional experience evaluating crop damage complaints and issuing Deer Management Permits.
- Experience and ability to operate equipment used in support of WMA habitat management activities.

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
