Main Purpose of Job

The Geologist Supervisor serves as the Section Head for the State Superfund / Site Assessment & NPL Section provides primary supervision to Geologists overseeing environmental investigations and remediation at sites statewide. The incumbent in this position will coordinate with US EPA, State and local government entities, and property owners to manage assessment and remediation of potentially contaminated sites. Such sites will be identified voluntarily through requests for Controlled Hazardous Substances Technical Review Services or through formal grants and workshare agreements with EPA. Sites coordinated with EPA will either be listed as a National Priority List (NPL) site, directed for further MDE investigation, or archived. This position requires supervision of Section staff responsible for EPA or State coordinated assessments, investigations, remediations, support of Section oversight at NPL sites, technical and regulatory direction to Section staff, and interfacing with supervisory and support personnel at the EPA.

The working conditions for this position involve: 

  • Exposure to uncomfortable or unpleasant surroundings. Site visits and actual collection of environmental samples entail a variety of exposure to field conditions that can be uncomfortable and unpleasant. These conditions include inclement weather, extreme heat or cold, briars, plant toxins (poison ivy), plant pollens (ragweed, etc.), mold, fungus and bird feces in old, abandoned buildings, biting insects, ticks, wild animals and other site-specific conditions. 
  • Responsibilities may include the inspection of actions conducted at sites that are potentially contaminated with hazardous substances. These inspections are conducted in accordance with the appropriate procedures and regulations, including the requirements described in 29 CFR Part 1910.
  • Field sampling may require extensive hand auguring and bending as well as loading and unloading filled sampling coolers that weigh more than 50 pounds when filled with samples and ice. Some sampling equipment, such as carboys filled with deionized water, may also exceed 50 pounds.
  • During on-site inspections, the incumbent will be required to wear personal protective equipment. This equipment routinely includes hardhats and steel toe/shank shoes, and it may be upgraded to include respirators and chemical protective gear according to site-specific conditions. 

The incumbent in this position will be required to drive a State vehicle.  If you maintain an out-of-state driving license, you must provide a certified copy of your driving record from the appropriate Motor Vehicle Administration at the time of appointment.  Individuals must maintain a driver's license with no more than 5 points on their driving record in order to drive a State vehicle.  

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:   A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Geology, Environmental Geology or a related earth science.

Experience: Six years of experience performing professional geological work.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in Geology, Environmental Geology or a related earth science for the required education and one year of the required experience.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience at a rank of Corporal/Petty Officer or higher as a commissioned officer in physical science classification or physical science specialty codes in the geology field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

It is preferred that the selected candidate has the following:

Experience working on National Priority List sites.
Supervisor experience.
Excellent organizational skills.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

2. Depending on the assigned essential functions of the work, employees in this classification may be required to successfully complete and maintain certification as specified in the U.S. Department of Labor, Occupational Safety and Health Administration Regulations (Standards-29 CFR) 1910.120 Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response. Information about these regulations is available in the Human Resources Office of the Maryland Department of the Environment or may be obtained at the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration Website.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Employees in this classification may be required to walk over rough or unstable terrain or over long distances while wearing personal protection equipment, such as respiratory protection equipment.

2. Employees in this classification may be subject to ongoing medical testing in accordance with the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration Regulations (Standards - 29 CFR) 1910.120 Hazard Waste Operations and Emergency Response.

3. Employees in this classification may be subject to call-in on a twenty-four hour basis and, therefore, will be required to provide the employing agency with a telephone number where they can be reached.

PERSONAL LEAVE - New State employees are awarded six (6) personal leave days annually (prorated based on start date).

ANNUAL LEAVE - ten (10) days of accumulated annual leave per year.

SICK LEAVE – fifteen (15) days of accumulated sick leave per year.

PARENTAL LEAVE – up to sixty (60) days of paid parental leave upon the birth or adoption of a child.
