Introduction

The Maryland Department of Commerce is seeking qualified applicants for a full-time, contractual Travel Information Aide Supervisor position within the Office of Tourism Development.  This position is located at the Bay Country Welcome Center on US 301 at 1000 Welcome Center Drive Centerville, Maryland (Queen Anne’s Co) 21617.

Main Purpose of Job

The primary function of this position is to supervise Travel Information Aides who provide inspirational travel information to Maryland visitors and to oversee the daily operations and maintenance of the welcome center.

POSITION DUTIES

Duties include assisting travelers with tourism information, directions, hotel accommodations, itineraries and emergency situations; supervising the dissemination of information to the traveling public: training, providing reports, and setting up familiarization tours; keeping records of tours, filing schedules, and ordering literature, and support with tourism development unit projects. The supervisor will also attend hospitality and training sessions, supervisor’s meetings and travel around Maryland on familiarization tours in order to keep informed about Maryland attractions, accommodations, recreational facilities, services and destinations.

Candidates should be able to relate to the public in a friendly and competent manner; and must be able to interpret highway maps. Applicants must be able to work weekends since the center is open 7 days per week, year-round.  Knowledge of Maryland history, geography and tourist attractions is required. Candidates must be computer literate and also be able to frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

The Welcome Center is open daily, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, 7 days a week, year-round.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants must possess:

Education:  high school diploma or a State GED certificate 

AND 

Experience: three (3) three years of experience working in public information in a tourism-related industry (e.g., accommodations, campgrounds, travel development agency, information center, guide service, customer service, hospitality, etc.).

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

Selective Qualification (required): One (1) year of experience involving management of a program and/or supervising staff.  

LIMITATIONS ON SELECTION

Applicants must be willing to accept employment in Centerville, MD which is approximately 58 miles (1 hour and 25 minutes) from the Baltimore Metro Area.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Candidates may be assigned duties which require the operation of an automobile, in such instances the employee will be required to possess a valid and appropriate operator's license.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
