Introduction

The Office of the Attorney General is seeking applicants for a contractual paralegal position for its Organized Crime Unit.

Main Purpose of Job

The position will provide paralegal and administrative support principally to the United States Attorney’s Office (“USAO”) for the District of Maryland and the candidate will work in the office of the USAO in Baltimore City or Greenbelt, Maryland.

POSITION DUTIES

Responsibilities include the organization and preparation of documents for discovery, assistance in all aspects of litigation including trial presentation, legal research and general administrative support.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

1.   The ideal candidate will have graduated from an accredited high school, or a high school equivalency certificate
2.  Possess a minimum of two years’ experience as a legal assistant or legal secretary performing legal research or drafting and reviewing legal documents on behalf of an attorney. 

NOTES:
1.  Thirty credit hours or a certificate in paralegal studies from an accredited college or university or law school may be substituted for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

1.  Familiarity with a variety of computer applications, specifically the Microsoft suite (Word, Excel, etc.) and Adobe Acrobat. 
2.  Conducts legal research and interprets and analyzes law sources in order to prepare legal documents such as briefs, pleadings, appeals and contracts.

BENEFITS

STATE OF MARYLAND BENEFITS

 

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
