POSITION DUTIES

This position is responsible for the management and operation of the Department’s (DoIT) high speed fiber optic data network (networkMaryland™) and the Local Area Network (LAN & WLAN) infrastructure for DoIT and Enterprise Agencies. 

This consists of planning, implementing, and maintaining a wide variety of network hardware, software applications, and connectivity components of the wide area and local area networks. In addition, this position manages contractor and DoIT LAN resources and projects, assigns work, and evaluates the performance of the contractor(s) and LAN Services technical support staff.

networkMaryland™ Operations 
Directs contractor(s) to ensure networkMaryland™ is available to support subscriber’s operations and applications.  In doing so, this position must manage resources that provide ongoing monitoring and maintenance of DoIT’s backbone network, repeater equipment, lateral fiber connections and termination equipment.  Responsibilities also include ensuring all network equipment is warrantied, software is current and supported and the network is available 24x7x365. This position also serves as the incident manager of all Priority Level outages and change manager for requested changes for networkMaryland™ to ensure DoIT meets availability and uptime Service Level Agreement (SLAs) for services as required by individual subscribers. Directs contractors in developing short and long-range engineering plans for networkMaryland™ to enhance operations. 

DoIT LAN Operations Directs the DoIT LAN services technical staff to ensure the LAN and WLAN infrastructure is available to support DoIT and Enterprise Agencies’ operations, equipment and applications.  Identify and validate, on a monthly basis, all LAN and WLAN devices under the operational responsibility of the DoIT LAN services team and/or vendor.  In doing so, this position must manage resources that provide ongoing incident management, monitoring and maintenance of DoIT and Enterprise customer’s LAN infrastructure.  Responsibilities also include ensuring all LAN and WLAN equipment is warranted, software is current and supported and the LAN infrastructure is available 8x5 and/or 24x7x365, depending on the criticality of the site and/or device.
  

DoIT LAN Service Delivery Assigns, plans, coordinates, supervises and evaluates the work of the LAN services technical staff that includes engineers and network security. Prioritizes and categorizes day-to-day activities properly to ensure the LAN technical staff is fulfilling service delivery tasking efficiently and effectively. Develops work plans, deadlines, and monitors the progress of projects and approves completed projects. Supports, participates and mentors DoIT LAN services technical staff during implementations and daily activities. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Five years of experience designing and implementing complex data communications or telecommunications networks. One year of which must have included managing technical staff.
Notes:
1. Candidates may substitute a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Computer Information Technology, Management Information Systems, Computer Science or other information technology related field of study to include coursework in database management systems for up to two years of the required experience.
2. Candidates may substitute additional graduate education at an accredited college or university, at the rate of thirty credit hours for each year of the required experience.
3. Candidates may substitute the U.S. Armed Forces military service experience in Database Administration classifications or Database Administration specialty codes in the Information Technology field of work on a year for year basis for the required experience and education.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Our Preferred Candidate Will Have: 
Experience working in a LAN/WLAN environment for the State of Maryland.
