POSITION DUTIES

The main purpose of this job consists of compiling and maintaining health records in a State Facility. The employee performs duties related to the ongoing organization of a system of files and records concerning patients’ diagnoses, treatments, admissions, discharges, and daily census changes. Employees receive moderate supervision from a Health Records Technician Supervisor or Health Records Program Supervisor.

NOTICE: Federal COVID-19 Vaccination Requirement for Certain Maryland Department of Health (MDH) Employees.
 
Per the emergency regulation issued by the U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) (86 FR 61555), and as permitted to go into effect by the U.S. Supreme Court on January 13, 2022, all staff at the Maryland Department of Health’s CMS certified health care facilities are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or have an approved religious exemption. If selected for this position, candidates will be required to provide proof of vaccination status or have an approved religious or medical exemption prior to appointment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Two years of experience compiling and maintaining health records. 

Notes: 

1. Candidates may substitute additional experience on a year-for-year basis for the required education. 

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Medical Record classifications or Patient Administration Specialists and Health Services Management specialty codes in the health records management field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The desired candidate should possess:
- Experience with transcription
- Experience with medical coding
- Experience using medical terminology

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Candidates for this classification must demonstrate the ability to type at a minimum speed of 20 words per minute.
