LOCATION OF POSITION

This vacancy will cover the State Correctional Facilities located in the Jessup and
Baltimore Regions, including Anne Arundel, Howard, Baltimore City, Baltimore Counties.

Main Purpose of Job

The Department of Labor, Office of Correctional Education, is accepting applications from qualified candidates for the position of Contractual GED Examiner within several of Maryland’s State Prisons. This is a professional contractual position that will travel within the Jessup and Baltimore regions to monitor all activities relevant to GED Testing and to conduct testing sessions in accordance with GED Testing Service and MD Labor policies and procedures.

POSITION DUTIES

Selected candidates will be required to become knowledgeable of confidentiality policies, provide clear directions and communicate effectively; organize test materials and perform multiple tasks involved with test administration; enforce testing policy and procedures; and be able to monitor tests for a minimum of six hours per session. GED Examiners shall receive in-service training and shall serve under an experienced GED Administrator during at least two full GED testing sessions before assuming duties as a GED Examiner.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: Six years experience in administrative staff or professional work.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelor's degree from a college or university and two years of experience in administrative staff or professional work for the required experience.

2. Candidates may substitute additional graduate level education at an accredited college or university at the rate of 30 credit hours for each year of the required experience.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer involving staff work that included regular use of independent judgment and analysis in applying and interpreting complex administrative plans, policies, rules or regulations or analysis of operational programs or procedures with recommendations for improvement on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

All candidates are subject to a background check against files maintained by the Division of Unemployment Insurance (MDOL/DUI) to determine whether any monies are owed to MDOL/DUI as a result of unemployment insurance overpayment/fraud. Any unpaid debt may have an impact on whether or not a candidate is offered employment. Demonstrated ability to accurately type on a keyboard of a personal computer at a minimum of forty words per minute may be required, depending on the specific requirements of the position.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
