POSITION DUTIES

The Department of Natural Resources, Maryland Forest Service/Western Region, is currently accepting applications for one (1) Long-Term Park Technician Trainee at Savage River State Forest, Grantsville (Garrett County), Maryland. This position is an entry level maintenance job in the State Forest. This employee will assist the Maintenance Supervisor with providing responsibility for the maintenance of grounds, facilities, and equipment. They may also provide assistance on new facilities and perform maintenance work. The primary function of this position is to provide maintenance; however, they may occasionally be assigned other operational function. The employee may be trained and commissioned as a Forest Warden under the Provisions of Natural Resources Article 5-206. A considerable amount of time is spent outdoors under varying conditions, often in isolated areas requiring arduous physical activity. This employee performs duties under close supervision and at times under general supervision, depending on the complexity of the duty being performed. This employee reports directly to the Maintenance Supervisor. The employee will be assigned to Savage River State Forest, which is 55,000+ acres. The employee will work independently performing moderately complex tasks in maintenance work, including heavy equipment operation for road and trail maintenance, making minor repairs or improvements to buildings, fixtures, mechanical equipment, grounds and roadways. The employee may operate small and heavy equipment, plant trees, monitor two Off-Road Vehicle Trails, operate chainsaws, work on habitat improvement projects, wildland fire suppression, and boundary line maintenance. The position is responsible for assisting with the general maintenance of buildings, grounds, facilities, and equipment for the State Forest. The work entails independently performing moderately complex tasks in maintenance work, including, routine construction and campsite maintenance. The selected candidates may be required to work some weekends and/or holidays.

This position is eligible for overtime pay compensation when their hours exceeds their normal work week hours.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Possession of a high school diploma or high school equivalence certificate.

Experience: None

Notes: 1. Applicants may substitute experience as defined above for the required High School education at the rate of one year experience for one year of education up to a maximum of four years.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred experience operating small equipment such as skid steer, lawn mowers, chainsaws; preferred ability to operate heavy equipment such as front-end loader, dozer, tractor, radial arm brush hog; knowledge of Savage River State Forest is a plus.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees appointed to positions in this classification may be assigned duties, which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Some positions in this classification are assigned duties which may require the individual to be examined by a physician. After an offer of employment, applicants for such positions will be given a medical examination to certify the ability to perform the essential job functions.

2. Upon permanent appointment the employee may be required to reside in the county, region, or park to which they are assigned.

3. Candidates appointed to positions in this classification may be assigned duties which require a valid operator license for heavy equipment, such as bulldozers, back-hoes, payloaders or tractors.

4. Persons appointed to these positions are subject to call-in on a 24-hour a day basis and will be required to provide the employing agency with a telephone number listed in the agency’s telephone directory or on file with Forest, Park and Wildlife Communication Centers in case of emergencies.

5. The employee may be required to attend training and be certified as a water plant operator.

6. Employees in this classification may be required to lift objects weighing up to 40 pounds or more.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
