Main Purpose of Job

The Maryland Park Service is currently recruiting for multiple seasonal contractual positions at Assateague State Park in Berlin, Maryland. You must indicate on the Supplemental Questionnaire the position(s) of interest in order to be considered for this recruitment. Please review the main purpose of each job closely before applying.

SEASONAL PARK RANGER LEAD (4 vacancies): A Seasonal Park Ranger Lead is a temporary level of work in the operation of a State park. Daily shift assignments may rotate, areas of work include acting as daily Duty Ranger; campground and day use area operations; grounds work/facility cleaning; traffic control; outreach/education and horse/human safety monitoring and education. Work is performed indoors and outdoors under various weather conditions and applicant will be exposed to all weather conditions including extreme temperatures and biting insects. Applicants must be available to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as scheduled. Part time and full time available. 

Duties may vary and generally include, but are not limited to: 
  • Serve as daily Duty Ranger to provide oversight to all aspects of park operations 
  • Preparation of reports and cash handling including verification of cash and credit card daily deposits ensuring completion and accuracy 
  • Assist in training and mentoring of seasonal park rangers, volunteers, ranger station attendants 
  • Assist in management of camp hosts and volunteers 
  • Provide visitors with park information and regulations; respond verbally and in writing to visitor requests for information, complaints, and compliments 
  • Provide traffic direction 
  • Register campers and operate computerized reservation system 
  • Conduct campground check-in and check-out procedures 
  • Employ management tactics for wildlife safety (including horse, deer, and birds) 
  • Respond to wildlife-human interactions with approved strategies for safe interactions 
  • Clean campground bath houses, restrooms, and facilities 
  • Monitor and cleanup of parking lots, beach, trails, and campground areas 
  • General maintenance of park trails, public facilities, staff buildings and vehicles 
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing; monitor and respond to written email communication on a regular basis 
  • May be assigned duties that require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Qualifying candidates must meet the following:
  • 12 months working in a park location in a role providing customer service (can include Seasonal Ranger, Naturalist, Ranger Station Attendant)
  • 12 months in cash handling and credit card sales processing
  • 6 months of experience in employing strategies for wildlife safety
  • Valid driver’s license

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Preferred candidate for Lead Seasonal Ranger will have at least one season (6 months) conducting horse/human safety in a state park setting
  • Preferred candidate for Lead Seasonal Ranger will have experience in training and mentoring
  • Preferred candidate for Lead Seasonal Ranger will have experience responding to emergencies (may include certification in CPR/First Aid; Emergency Medical Responder; experience with two-way radio communications)
  • Preferred candidate for Lead Seasonal Ranger will have experience working in a park setting to include providing customer service, working with a reservations system, responding to emergencies, assisting with facility repair and maintenance

SELECTION PROCESS

For education obtained outside the U.S., a copy of the equivalent American education as determined by a foreign credential evaluation service must be provided prior to hire.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
