Introduction

This is a seasonal recruitment for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Maryland Park Service. There are Five (5) vacancies: Three (3) Park Ranger and Two (2) Building Services Workers.

Main Purpose of Job

The Maryland Park Service is currently recruiting for multiple seasonal contractual positions at the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad State Park in Church Creek, Maryland and Bill Burton State Park in Trappe, Maryland. You must indicate on the Supplemental Questionnaire the position(s) of interest in order to be considered for this recruitment. Please review the main purpose of each job closely before applying.

PARK RANGER (3 vacancies) ($17 / hour) A Seasonal Park Ranger is a temporary, introductory level of work in the operation of a State park. Work is performed indoors and outdoors under various weather conditions. Applicants must be available to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as scheduled. 

Duties may vary for each facility and generally include, but are not limited to: 
  • Provide visitors with park information and regulations 
  • Monitor and cleaning of restrooms 
  • General maintenance of park trails, public facilities, staff buildings and DNR vehicles 
  • Monitor recreational activities in the park 
  • Staff the visitor center and work closely with partners 
  • Provide quality interpretive programming including tours about Harriet Tubman’s early years in Dorchester County and the Underground Railroad 
  • Clean the visitor center, administrative building, pavilion, restrooms and other locations 
  • May be assigned duties that require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland. 

BUILDING SERVICES WORKER (2 vacancies) ($16.15 / hour) The Building Services Worker position is responsible for the maintenance of park restroom and visitor facilities, grounds, and equipment.  Work is performed indoors and outdoors under various weather conditions. Applicants must be available to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as scheduled.

Duties generally include, but are not limited to: 
  • Clean restrooms facilities 
  • Refill bathroom supplies 
  • Clean buildings, facilities, and exhibits 
  • Maintenance of facilities and grounds 
  • May include mowing and trimming of grass 
  • Removing litter and trash

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
