Main Purpose of Job

Within the Maryland Department of Health (MDH), the Prevention and Health Promotion Administration (PHPA)'s mission is to improve the health of Marylanders by reducing the transmission of infectious diseases; helping impacted people live longer and healthier lives; and, protecting individuals and communities from environmental health hazards. PHPA works in partnership with Local Health Departments (LHDs), providers, community-based organizations, and public and private sector agencies to provide public health leadership in the prevention, control, monitoring, and treatment of infectious diseases and environmental health hazards.

This position will function within the Division of Infectious Disease Surveillance (DIDS) of the Center for Surveillance, Infection Prevention, and Outbreak Response, which is within the Infectious Disease Epidemiology and Outbreak Response Bureau (IDEORB). This position will provide administrative and technical support that contributes to the Program's use of the NEDSS Base System (NBS) for notifiable disease reporting. Such support will include, but not be limited to, maintenance and review of the Person Registry and Certain Other shared data or code tables; triage and review of record information for quality assurance; coordination of the granting of access for system use; and, provision of training and assistance for system users.

The maintenance of a highly functioning mandatory reportable disease surveillance system is essential to the Program's mission of preventing and controlling communicable diseases which occur in a natural or intentional setting.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Three years of experience performing clerical, clerical technical, or secretarial work. 

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute 30 college credit hours from an accredited college or university for each year of the required experience.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a Non-Commissioned Officer involving staff work requiring regular use of independent judgment and analysis in applying and interpreting rules and regulations, in accordance with agency laws and policies, on a year-for-year basis, for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The desired candidate should have experience evaluating personnel records, including ensuring the consistency and completeness of record information. The desired candidate should also have experience conducting training for fellow employees, as well as experience collaborating with other health agencies (i.e. Maryland Department of Health, Local Health Departments) regarding data quality and quality assurance.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.
