POSITION DUTIES

The main purpose of the Police Communications Supervisor is supervision of the communications center at a Maryland State Police Barrack. The work involves supervising employees that are Police Communication Operator I’s and II’s., who are engaged in providing services to law enforcement and other authorized agencies while facilitating officer safety by monitoring police radio transmissions and utilizing all relative communications equipment. The Police Communications supervisor is responsible for administrative duties and inspections involving METERS/NCIC and other related CAD software.

1.     Assigns and reviews work, signs time sheets, approves leave, evaluates job performance and disciplines subordinate staff in a police communications operation;

2.     Supervises Police Communications Operator positions;

3. Evaluates existing and proposed communications procedures and equipment and makes recommendations regarding their adoption, modification or procurement;

4.   Establishes, modifies, and implements internal operational methods and procedures, orders supplies for communications operations, and monitors budgetary expenditures;

5.     Supervises the sending, receiving, distribution and retention of electronic message communications;

6.      Prepares and coordinates shift schedules and work distribution assignments;

7.     Organizes and implements training programs for new Police Communications Operators;

8.     Updates and maintains various communication procedural manuals;

9.     Prepares and maintains various statistical and activity logs and records;

10. Reviews production data and work reports of communication services to ensure efficient and effective operations;

11. Receives and transmits information via multi-channel radio, telephone and computer terminal equipment;

12. Requests or provides information regarding traffic records, statistics, driver’s license and automobile registration;

13. Performs other related duties.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:   Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Three years experience performing law enforcement communications work involving the operation of a computer terminal, multi-channel radio, and related equipment.

Note: Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Operations Specialist classifications or Signal Corps, Cyberspace Support, or Communications specialty codes in the communications field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Must be a Maryland State Police current employee (Permanent, Contractual, Temporary).
  2. Prior supervision experience performing law enforcement communications work.
  3. Prior experience providing training to other performing law enforcement communications.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties may be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Applicants for this classification may be subject to an extensive background investigation prior to appointment.

2. Employees in this classification will be required to provide a telephone number at which they can be reached.

SELECTION PROCESS

Only candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will be considered for this classification.  Therefore, it is essential that you provide complete and accurate information on your application. Successful candidates will be place on the Eligible List categorized as BEST QUALIFIED, BETTER QUALIFIED OR QUALIFIED and remain eligible for consideration for at least one year from the date of examination. The list will be used by the hiring manager to select employees.

EXAMINATION PROCESS

The examination will consist of a rating of your education, training and experience related to the requirements of the position. You may be required to complete a qualifications supplement, or the rating may be based on your application. Report all experience and education that is related to this position. Applicants will be subject to an interview.
