Introduction
This is a 12-month position
in the maintenance department of the Maryland School for the Deaf
– Columbia Campus. This position is designated as Essential
Personnel.

POSITION DUTIES
Perform general
maintenance tasks such as simple construction, preventive maintenance,
improvements, and minor repairs to buildings, fixtures, mechanical equipment,
grounds, and roadways.
Employee may be required
to check and service converter units; repair, service, and
inspect door locks, housekeeping equipment, furniture, and safety equipment;
assist with making repairs to HVAC air handler units and related
equipment; perform daily preventive maintenance checks to ensure proper
operation of all equipment; install, replace, or repair water fountains, restroom
fixtures, broken piping, gaskets, valves, and other plumbing related
equipment as necessary; repair or move furniture, put up or repair drywall,
hang doors, replace windows and window panes, install cabinets, and/or
other carpentry related tasks as necessary; apply finish and/or paint to
completed projects; perform security functions; ensure buildings and gates
are locked each day as required. Successful candidate must be able to
lift 50 lbs or more and must be able to assist with snow removal on the campus.
Must be willing to learn
American Sign Language.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Eighth grade.
Experience: Three years of experience in any combination of the maintenance trades provided that at least two years of experience are primarily in the trades of electricity, plumbing, steamfittings, refrigeration or air-conditioning.
Notes:
1. Candidates may substitute additional experience in any of the maintenance trades on a year-for-year basis for up to three years of the required education.
2. Candidates may substitute the possession of a degree from an accredited vocational or technical high school with a major in Building Maintenance or a related field for the required experience.
3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in utilities repair classifications or construction and engineering specialty codes in any combination of maintenance trades, on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS
Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.
