POSITION DUTIES

This position will act as a research and development scientist by conducting applied research to develop, validate and implement new laboratory testing procedures for hereditary and metabolic disorders at the State Public Health Laboratory as part of the Laboratories Administration's quality public health laboratory activities to promote, protect, and preserve the health and well-being of the babies in Maryland from hereditary and metabolic diseases.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:   A Master’s degree in Biochemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Genetics, Immunology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Medical Technology, Pharmacy or Zoology from an accredited college or university.

Experience: One year of experience performing public health applied research and development in a university, private or public health laboratory system.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Doctorate degree from an accredited college or university in any of the disciplines noted above for the required experience.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Health Science Research Officer classifications or Medical Laboratory Specialists specialty codes in the Science related field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

The selected candidate must possess the following:
  • Experience with MSMS (Mass Spectrometry) and/or molecular technology

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The desired candidate should possess the following:
  • Experience working in a clinical or chemistry laboratory
  • Experience with Quality Control and Quality Assurance

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.
