The Maryland Office of the Public Defender (OPD) is seeking a paralegal to serve as an essential team member on a grant focused on facilitating the review of police body-worn camera video by public defenders. This is a grant-funded position based within OPD’s IT Division that is expected to run through September 30, 2022.

Main Purpose of Job

A Paralegal I is the intermediate level of support work to an attorney involving legal research, application of Maryland case law and preparation of various legal documents. Employees in this classification do not supervise. Employees receive moderate supervision from an attorney.

POSITION DUTIES

OVERVIEW OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
*Facilitate the use of video evidence organizational software by converting body worn camera (BWC) video to MP4 formatting.
*Provide training and support to OPD core staff and attorneys utilizing video evidence organizational software. 
*Assist attorneys with review of BWC video.Collaborate with OPD’s IT team to troubleshoot software issues.
* Assist with data collection and grant reporting obligations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

 Experience: Two years of experience as a legal assistant or legal secretary performing legal research or preparing legal documents on behalf of an attorney.

 Notes: 1. Thirty credit hours or a certificate in paralegal studies from an accredited college or university may be substituted for the required experience.

 2. Thirty credit hours from an accredited law school may be substituted for the required experience.

 3. Additional years of experience as stated above may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

4. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in paralegal specialist classifications or paralegal specialist specialty codes in the legal and kindred field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Comfortable with technology.Experience with digital video files. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Detail-oriented and able to meet internal and external deadlines.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

In-state travel required.
