Introduction
The Maryland State Retirement and Pension System (the “System”) is administered by the State Retirement Agency (the “Agency”), and is seeking an Executive Director (ED). The System was established by State statute to provide retirement and other benefits to State employees, teachers, police, judges, legislators, correctional facility employees and employees of participating governmental units.
The ED reports to a 15-member Board and is primarily responsible for ensuring the Board’s mission is fulfilled and that the Board’s administrative and investment policies are executed efficiently, equitably, and expediently. The Agency administers 12 separate defined benefit pension plans with combined assets of approximately $55 billion. The Agency employs approximately 215 staff members and is based in Baltimore.
This is an executive level position and serves at the pleasure of the Board of Trustees of the Maryland State Retirement and Pension System.

Main Purpose of Job
The Executive Director is the Chief Executive Officer of the System, responsible for the efficient on-going management of the System. The Executive Director is appointed by, reports directly to, and serves at the pleasure of the Board of Trustees, which sets the policies and mission for the System within the constraints of law.
The Executive Director’s primary responsibility is to see that the Board’s mission is fulfilled and that the Board’s administrative and investment policies are executed efficiently, equitably, and expediently. The Executive Director is responsible for 12 separate defined benefit pension systems covering over 244,000 participants and 167,644 pension annuitants whose pension benefit payments exceed $4.2 billion annually.
The Executive Director is administratively responsible for the System’s investment management responsibilities, including the operating budget and personnel concerns of the Investment Division, although the Chief Investment Officer reports directly to the Board’s Investment Committee regarding the System’s investment program.
