We are currently
accepting applications to create a pool of qualified individuals who can work
on an as needed basis to temporarily continue the lessons planned for the

LOCATION OF POSITION
Main Purpose of Job
Substitute teaching assignments may change
based on the needs of the school. A substitute teacher may be asked to accept
assignments outside his/her background or educational training. They may also
be asked to cover classes during a planning period. It is not expected that a
substitute teacher be able to teach new or unfamiliar materials, but rather
make every attempt to follow the lesson plan and manage student behavior in the
most positive way possible.
POSITION DUTIES
Follow the lesson plan left by the teacher
and ensure students complete all assigned tasks, maintain a safe environment,
keep students under direct supervision at all times, leave information
concerning the day's activities for the teacher, and maintain strict
confidentiality of students and school personnel information.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree required.
Fluency in American
Sign Language and written English required.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience working with a diverse student population
including underserved students, strong classroom management skills, and
knowledge of the Deaf Community preferred.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
New hires are subject to
a criminal background investigation at their own expense. (Maryland Code,
Family Law Article 1, Sections 5-560-568)
Candidates will need to
provide three letters of recommendation.
SELECTION PROCESS
Applications will be prescreened before
candidates are invited to an interview. As an equal opportunity employer,
MSD is committed to recruiting, retaining, and promoting employees who are
reflective of the State's diversity.
BENEFITS
Contractual employees who
work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and
Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or
more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for
subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a
contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums
for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents
you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of
the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage,
accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be
responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.
Leave may be granted to a
contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave
accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours
per calendar year.
