Main Purpose of Job

This position will support students and staff at both the Columbia and Frederick campuses supporting students with special needs and all teachers to ensure the most complex learners at MSD are receiving appropriate services and supports to meet their individual needs and which are designed to address achievement differences identified in their learning progression are being addressed.

 

To develop and implement a bilingual educational program for Deaf students with additional disabilities in a language accessible environment as well as provide an enriched bicultural environment conducive to the development of the optimal social and emotional growth of Deaf students with additional disabilities.  To provide a language enriched environment through the use of American Sign Language, printed word and visual supports to meet the varied needs of Deaf students with additional disabilities throughout our school birth - 21. 

 

Ensure equity and unbiased practices are implemented in the classroom and throughout the system of special education.

POSITION DUTIES

Serve as a special education teacher providing inclusive services (which includes supporting the student in the classroom alongside peers or outside of the classroom with small groups or individual instruction to our students with additional disabilities), throughout our general education classrooms, supporting their IEP goals, implementation of IEP accommodations and modifications, and serving as a leading member of these students interdisciplinary teams to achieve their goals and meet their learning needs. Adapt materials for individualized and differentiated instruction. Assess and teach functional academic and life skills. Use formal and informal assessments to guide individualized instruction. Work collaboratively with an interdisciplinary team of professionals, including paraprofessionals. Prepare solid plans for individual instruction based on student assessments and data, using the evidenced based practices of bilingual pedagogy, applied behavior analysis and specially designed instruction when providing services.

 

Serve as a resource specialist to both the general education and special education teachers in how to design and implement a structured environment to meet the unique needs of Deaf students with additional disabilities/special needs following both the general education curriculum and alternate standards. Coach teachers and staff on how to create and maintain a classroom conducive to learning for students with additional disabilities; how to develop IEPs in alignment with state expectations; utilize effective classroom management for optimal learning including managing student behavior; implement specially designed instruction (SDI); model appropriate behavior and promote self-control; collect data and follow individualized planning and behavior plans.

 

Serve as a special education coordinator developing curricular materials for Deaf students with additional disabilities; providing coaching and mentoring to teachers working with students with additional disabilities; create and implement teacher professional development; collaborating with families, providing training and resources as needed regarding strategies and techniques to use in the home.

 

This position reports to the Director of Curriculum and Instruction but also works with the Director of IEP Services.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:  Bachelor's degree required.

Candidates must be eligible to apply for or be willing to obtain certification by the Maryland State Department of Education and a master’s degree within a prescribed amount of time.  Fluency in American Sign Language and written English required.  Knowledge of the Deaf culture, Deaf Education, students with additional disabilities and ability to teach students on different levels and with varying educational and language acquisition backgrounds is required. Three years successfully teaching students with special needs. Experience writing Individual Educational Programs (IEPs).

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Master's degree in Special Education, Deaf Education or related field, Maryland State Department of Education Certification, experience/education in Applied Behavior Analysis and Verbal Behavior, experience working with Deaf students with autism and/or other developmental delays, knowledge of Brigance assessments. Experience coaching/mentoring teachers, developing and adapting curricular materials for use by others. Five years of experience successfully teaching students with special needs. Experience developing and providing teacher training/workshops.
