Main Purpose of Job

This position will work on both the Columbia and Frederick campuses supporting teachers and staff to ensure the development and implementation of a bilingual educational program for Deaf students in a language accessible environment as well as the provision of an enriched bicultural environment conducive to the development of the optimal social and emotional growth of Deaf students.  To support the provision of a language enriched environment through the use of American Sign Language, printed word and visual supports to meet the varied needs of Deaf students throughout our school birth - 21. To ensure student needs are being met, the curriculum is being implemented with fidelity, best practices are being implemented and achievement gaps are being addressed. Ensure equity and unbiased practices are implemented in the classroom and throughout the system of curriculum and instruction.

This is an 11-month position.

POSITION DUTIES

Instruction: Provide instructional models of best practices to ELA and social studies teachers through modeling lessons, mentoring/coaching teachers, developing and implementing professional development, and staying informed of current trends and best practices for instructional methods. Provide feedback to teachers based on observation, and student performance data. Implement the new teacher induction program. Support struggling teachers. Monitor the implementation of the Maryland College and Career State Standards. Support teachers pedagogical best practices in closing the achievement gap, implementing equitable and unbiased practices. Oversees the development of and implementation of intervention programs as well as gifted and talented programming.

Curriculum: Lead the selection of ELA and social studies textbooks, and curricular materials through facilitating curriculum review committees. Develop and improve instructional/curricular materials for courses. In collaboration with others, review curricular materials for equity and bias. Enhance curricular materials to ensure diversity is reflected throughout. Work to develop new courses in alignment with MSD expectations. Determine expectations for essential standards and curriculum that must be taught and learned. Develop and design benchmark assessments to track student learning. Evaluate student performance data, teaching strategies, and curriculum materials, and make recommendations based on analysis. In collaboration with others, review curricular materials for equity and bias. Must be able to clearly explain changes to the curriculum or instructional practices to teachers, principals, staff and the community.

Attend quarterly state briefings for English language arts  and social studies, meetings are held around the state, and serve on state content area development committees. Collaborate with MSDE staff and other county content specialists as appropriate.

This position reports to the Director of Curriculum and Instruction.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:  Bachelor's degree required.

Candidates must be eligible to apply for or be willing to obtain certification by the Maryland State Department of Education and master’s degree in curriculum or related field within a prescribed amount of time.  Fluency in American Sign Language and written English required.  Knowledge of the Deaf culture, Deaf Education, and ability to teach students on different levels and with varying educational and language acquisition backgrounds is required. Five years of successful classroom instruction in either English Language Arts/English and/or social studies required.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Master's degree Special Education, Curriculum, Deaf Education or related field, Maryland State Department of Education Certification; experience in leadership, coaching/mentoring teachers, and developing and adapting curricular materials for use by others. Training in bilingual pedagogy. Experience developing and providing teacher training/workshops. Experience with students with additional disabilities and knowledge of  using alternate standards. Experience with various grade bands (eg. early childhood, elementary school, middle school, high school).
