Introduction
The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) invites eligible candidates to apply for an internship with Fishing and Boating Services, Blue Crab Program. This opportunity will provide hands-on experience in the field of fisheries management.
This is an unpaid internship position. Eligible candidates must be currently enrolled in a college or university and have a faculty liaison who is willing and able to work with the DNR supervisor to coordinate an internship which will earn the student credit. If the selected candidate is not earning academic credit, then s/he will be considered a volunteer.
LOCATION OF POSITION
Main Purpose of Job
The main purpose of this position is to assist with the summer trawl survey which samples and monitors blue crabs and key finfish species. A wide range of locations are sampled primarily on the Eastern Shore from Stevensville to the MD/VA state line. Applicants must be willing to work a flexible schedule, which will include early start times and work in extreme conditions including heat, humidity, rain, moderate seas, and/or presence of biting/stinging insects or sea nettles. The position will also assist with data entry and equipment and vessel maintenance.
The internship runs approximately 16 weeks between June-September. The specific start/end dates, hours, and schedule are flexible and will be determined in collaboration between the intern and supervisor.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants must be a current college student, undergraduate or graduate level. A GPA of 2.5 or above is required for academic credit.
The candidate must be seeking a degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Environmental Science, Aquaculture, Natural Science, Natural Resources Management, Botany, Marine Biology, Marine Ecology, Physical Oceanography, Ichthyology, Fisheries Management, Wildlife Management, Zoology, or a natural resources management related field of study.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience with working aboard small boats
Experience with Microsoft Excel and Access
