Main Purpose of Job

Maryland State Department of Education’s Deputy Director of Engagement and Strategic Partnerships will lead strategic community engagement, outreach and communications as well as supervise staff who conduct these activities in order to fulfill the mission of the agency. The Deputy Director of Engagement and Strategic Partnership will work with educations partners and stakeholders to build collaborative relationships. The incumbent will oversee strategic communications and outreach for the MSDE’s community engagement program, that establishes and evaluates objectives supporting MSDE’s multi-year strategic plan and Blueprint for Maryland’s Future initiatives. This position will direct outreach activities, and supervise staff who are responsible for developing materials, conducting community-based town halls and roundtables, and executing other engagement activities with a lens focused on equity and accelerating student achievement.

POSITION DUTIES

  • Conveys MSDE organization, policies, mission, and programs to community officials, state and local officials, school communities, parents, students and staff through various grassroots activities
  • Solicits feedback and input for MSDE programs, policies and initiatives
  • Schedules, organizes and implements in-person, virtual and hybrid town hall meetings
  • Applies knowledge of MSDE policies and objectives to identify, define, and organize resources for large and small-scale community engagement events. Acquires and allocates resources to accomplish activities within established schedules and budgetary requirements. 
  • Creates documents, including surveys, partnership descriptions, and fliers/ advertorials/ presentations and displays for outreach
  • Publicly reports progress, outcomes and results through a variety of communications platforms, including but limited to: social media, e-newsletters, web content, summaries, etc.
  • Works with data team to ensure effectiveness
  • Casts wide net outside traditional partners to ensure equity in outreach
  • Develops partnerships with non-profit organizations
  • Develop surveys and other tools to solicit input/ feedback
  • Effectively manages and provides directions for Community Engagement coordinators

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education = Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university

Experience = Six years of experience overseeing community engagement programs, Two years of this experience must be in managing and supervising staff
