Introduction
The Maryland Historical Trust (MHT), an
agency of the Maryland Department of Planning, is seeking to hire a full time,
contractual Patterson Collections Technician for Jefferson Patterson and Museum
(JPPM). Located on 560 scenic acres along the Patuxent River in Calvert County,
Maryland, JPPM is home to over 65 archaeological sites, more than 30 historic
buildings and structures, and the Maryland Archaeological Conservation
Laboratory. JPPM supports the preservation of Maryland's cultural resources and
connects people to the past through the preservation and interpretation of our
onsite historical and archaeological resources.
JPPM is seeking a detail-oriented candidate who
is interested in the historical museum collections to fill the position of Patterson
Collections Technician as part of a one-year IMLS grant-funded project “Patterson
Collection Assessment and Accessibility Initiative”.

POSITION DUTIES
The IMLS grant-funded project 'Patterson Collection Assessment and Accessibility Initiative' will evaluate the status of the Patterson Collections, the JPPM historic and agricultural collections, and begin the process of upgrading the collections to industry standards for curation. This project will make our Patterson Collections more accessible to the public, expand our onsite offerings to better meet the needs of our visitors and better represent the diversity of the southern Maryland community, and create digital exhibits to allow individuals across Maryland and the country to engage with these resources. The Patterson Collections Technician will work alongside relevant JPPM staff to compile and organize the digital and physical collections data, enter the data into a database, correlate the data with the physical collections, and inventory and rehouse the physical collections. The Patterson Collections Technician will assist relevant staff in designing the database and will create new onsite and digital exhibits using items in this collection focusing on the agricultural heritage of southern Maryland.
Working with the relevant staff at JPPM,
including but not limited to the Patterson Curator, the Executive Director, and
the Assistant Director, the Patterson Collections Technician will:
- Assist with the implementation of a single database
to manage the historic collections of the Patterson Collections, including objects,
photographs, oral histories, archives, and collection records.
- Compile and organize the digital and physical
collections data of the Patterson Collections, including but not limited to
spreadsheets, printed copies of old catalogs, deeds of gift, and inventories, ensuring
correlation with the physical objects.
- Design a database and conduct data entry.
Rehouse, re-label, and stabilize the physical
collections as needed.
- Assist with the creation of new onsite and
digital exhibits, using items in this collection focusing on the agricultural
heritage of southern Maryland.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Associate Degree or 2-year diploma in History,
Anthropology, Library Sciences, Museum Studies, or a related field.
Experience:
1 year of professional experience or
internships including one or more of the following: museum or archival collections
management; complex data management and database development; digital and
physical exhibit development.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Preference will be given to applicants who possess the following preferred qualification(s). Include clear and specific information on your application regarding your qualifications.
1. Bachelor’s degree or certification from an
accredited four-year college or university in History, Anthropology, Library
Sciences, Museum Studies, or a related field.

assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be
required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of
Maryland.
