The Maryland Historical Trust (MHT), an agency of the Maryland Department of Planning, is seeking to hire a contractual Public Services Coordinator for Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum (JPPM). Located on 560 scenic acres along the Patuxent River in Calvert County, Maryland, JPPM is home to over 65 archaeological sites, more than 30 historic buildings and structures, and the Maryland Archaeological Conservation Laboratory. JPPM supports the preservation of Maryland's cultural resources and connects people to the past through the preservation and interpretation of our onsite historical and archaeological resources.  www.jefpat.org

Main Purpose of Job

This position coordinates visitor services, manages and operates the Museum Visitor Center and the Show Barn Museum Shop, oversees and schedules weekend public use and rentals of JPPM's core public area, and develops advertising and marketing plans for pavilion rentals. Work hours are flexible and include evenings and weekends.

POSITION DUTIES

  1. Ensures that quality visitor services are offered at the Museum Visitor Center, including greeting visitors, responding to requests for information, and training seasonal visitor center staff.
  2. Manages all aspects of the Show Barn Museum Shop including purchasing, accounting, guest services, pricing and returns.
  3. Schedules and coordinates Pavilion and waterfront rentals as well as the diverse uses of the Museum Visitor Center.  This includes responding to rental inquiries, providing tours of the facilities to potential renters, providing on-site guidance for renters on the day of their events, and marketing the rental facilities in the region.
  4. Processes reservations for workshops, camps, rentals, and special programs at the facility. Act as the main point of contact for callers/visitors seeking information about JPPM.
  5. Assists the Business Manager with financial tasks as needed.
  6. Participates in special events sponsored by JPPM. 
  7. Performs other duties as may be assigned by the Assistant Director.
  8. Evening and weekend work will be required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:  Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience:  Six months of work experience performing clerical duties in a professional environment. 

Notes: 
1. Additional experience performing clerical duties may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education. 

2. Six months clerical training with three courses in subjects such as keyboarding, clerical math, word processing, spreadsheets, database, graphics presentation, proofreading, or office etiquette may be substituted for the required experience. 

 3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Administration classifications or in Administrative, Clerical, or Office Services specialty codes in the Clerical Support field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education:  Bachelor’s degree with preference for degrees in the following areas: business, accounting, marketing, hospitality, communications, public relations, public history, museum studies or related fields

Experience:  
  • Experience working in customer service or retail and / or working in a museum setting 
  • Experience with retail operations 
  • Experience with event planning or event coordination

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
