 State Salary Grade 22                                                                                                                     Annual Salary Range: $70,280 - $91,605 (with progression to $112,848)

Main Purpose of Job

This is a professional position serving as Coordinator for K-12 science and environmental literacy programs and products aligned to the Maryland Next Generation Science Standards for students.

POSITION DUTIES

The Coordinator of Science provides leadership for all services supporting pre-kindergarten through grade 12 Science teaching and learning related to the implementation of the Maryland Next Generation Science and Environmental Literacy Standards and the grades 5, 8, and high school Maryland Integrated Science Assessments (MISA) for science. This position will provide leadership on science content expertise by providing state-wide leadership and technical assistance in all matters pertaining to science standards development, curricular design, instructional implementation, and professional learning.  The Coordinator of Science works closely with the MSDE Assessment Office to provide technical assistance, content expertise, and support for the development of the grades 5, 8, and high school Maryland Integrated Science Assessments (MISA).  The position supervises all staff specialists and support staff assigned to the Office of Science and is fiscally accountable for programs, projects, and initiatives.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION: Possession of a Master’s Degree or equivalent 36 credit hours of post-baccalaureate course work.

EXPERIENCE: Five (5) years of administrative or teaching experience in, or affiliated with, an education program, including two years of experience in coordinating or administering an education program or service directly related to the position option.

NOTES:

1. Two additional years of experience directly related to the position option may be substituted for the required Master’s Degree. 

2. Possession of a Doctorate in a field related to the position may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

3. The required field of education and experience are unique for each option and are established by MSDE in accordance with Education Article, Section 2-104 of the Annotated Code of Maryland. The specific education and experience qualifications for each position are on record in the Office of Human Resources of the Division of Business Services of the Department of Education.                                     

4. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Education Program classifications or Education Program specialty codes in the Education field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

Two years of professional experience coordinating or administering an education program or service directly related to a preK-12 Science program.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Leadership experience including providing district or school-wide professional learning with preK-12 Science; Certification in Science; Knowledge of Maryland Next Generation Science Standards, Science and Environmental Literacy COMAR regulations, and Maryland’s Environmental Literacy Standards; knowledge of trends, regulations, and policies affecting instruction and assessment in science and environmental literacy; skill in managing multiple tasks and time sensitive deadlines; skill in organizing multiple schedules; ability to work as a team member and establish and maintain effective working relationships; ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
