Main Purpose of Job

To assist in the implementation of prescribed group therapy programs and patient assessments for the mentally ill. To implement and provide direct services in the form of groups or individual therapy to the severe and persistently mentally ill patients. Will function as a member of the treatment team. Support the mission of the organization through active participation in clinical efforts to provide treatment in a recovery-oriented environment. The foundation of a recovery-oriented environment is to facilitate resiliency, health and wellness in the community of the individual choice.

Some job responsibilities may include, but are not limited to: 
  • Conducts therapeutic activities in art, music, crafts, games, exercise, or social events as directed by the Therapeutic Recreators or other health professional.
  • Plans and organizes therapeutic activity group by assigning patients to specific group activities. 
  • Prepares group activity by setting up equipment and material, informing staff of the day's agenda and escorting patients to program areas. 
  • Plans, coordinates and implements individual and group Activity Therapy treatment to effectively help psychiatric inpatients achieve their highest level of physical, social, emotional and mental functioning to facilitate community reentry. 
  • Collaborates with and participates in multidisciplinary team meetings and daily review of unit information. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:     Completion of 60 credits hours from an accredited college or university with at least 15 credits hours in health services, human services, education or the behavioral sciences.  

Experience:   Two years of experience assisting in the implementation of activity therapy programs under the supervision of a healthcare professional to include assisting in patient/client assessments for mentally ill patients, aged, or physically ill or physically disabled patients or developmentally disabled clients.

1. Applicants may substitute two additional years of experience assisting in the implementation of prescribed activity therapy programs under the supervision of a healthcare professional to include assisting in patient/client assessments for mentally ill, aged, physically ill or physically disabled patients or developmentally disabled clients for the required education.  

2. Applicants may substitute a Bachelor’s degree in art therapy, dance therapy, music therapy or therapeutic recreation for the required experience.      

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Therapy classifications or Therapy specialty codes in the Therapeutic Recreation field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of an automobile.  Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.  

2. Employees in some positions this classification may be required to operate vehicles which require a Class "C" motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.  

3. Employees in this classification may be required to successfully complete and maintain current certification of cardio-pulmonary resuscitation training.  

4. Employees in this classification at facilities with a swimming pool may be required to obtain Red Cross instruction and certification in Life Saving and Water Safety prior to appointment.

Candidates may remain on the certified eligible list for a period of at least one year. The resulting certified eligible list for this recruitment may be used for similar positions in this or other State agencies.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
