Main Purpose of Job
Directly support the provision of enrichment services that sustains the vocational goals of consumers at the Workforce and Technology Center (WTC) to include providing travel training using public transportation to teach consumers how to commute between home or internships and WTC while attending WTC for vocational training.
POSITION DUTIES
Conducts and leads group and individual
enrichment activities for individuals with a variety of most significant
disabilities; plans, designs, implements, and evaluates enrichment programs in
accordance with consumers’ needs, capabilities, and interests; visually
observes and documents consumer behavior when performing enrichment activities;
assesses consumer needs and capabilities in order to place consumers in the
appropriate existing enrichment group program or determine the type of
individual program needed; participates in interdisciplinary team meetings as
requested; and orders and maintains necessary supplies and equipment.
Provides travel training to teach consumers how to commute between home or
internships sites and the WTC using public transportation prior to or while
attending classes at WTC. Provides group instruction and activities, gives
independent assignments, and completes group trips on public transportation to
desired destinations. Ensures students learn safety practices, public
transportation rules and etiquette guidelines, visual route navigation details,
and basic public transportation knowledge.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in therapeutic recreation or recreation with a major in therapeutic recreation from an accredited college or university.
Experience: One year of experience performing therapeutic recreation work in the treatment of mentally ill, aged, physically ill, or physically disabled patients or developmentally disabled clients.
Notes:
1. Current certification as a Therapeutic Recreator from the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification may be substituted for the education requirements.
2. Experience as a professional therapeutic recreator, under the supervision of a licensed Occupational Therapist, licensed Physical Therapist or certified Activity Therapist, which included the responsibility for clients’ assessments and the planning, implementation and evaluation of clients’ recreation therapy treatment in a mental health or developmental disability setting may be substituted for the education requirement on a year for year basis. Experience assisting in these responsibilities will not be accepted as qualifying experience.
3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Physical Therapy classifications or Physical Therapist and Medical Specialists specialty codes in the therapeutic field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS
1. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.
2. Employees in some positions in this classification may be required to operate vehicles which require a specific motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.
3. Employees in this classification may be required to successfully complete cardiopulmonary resuscitation training and maintain current certification.
4. Employees in this classification at facilities with a swimming pool may be required to obtain Red Cross instruction and certification in Life Saving and Water Safety prior to appointment.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
The shift will
primarily be the evening shift 2:30pm-11pm Sunday-Thursday but may be subject to
rotating shifts to provide coverage which may include day shift or holidays as
needed.
Person appointed to
position in this classification will be required to provide a cell phone number
where they can be reached as this position is identified as Emergency Essential
Personnel and subject to call-in and compensatory time based on staffing needs.

Employees in this
classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code
of Maryland Regulations 06.01.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.
Person appointed to
position in this classification will be assigned duties which require the
operation of a motor vehicle including a car, five-passenger van, and a
12-passenger van. Employees assigned such duties will be required to
possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland, and
their driving records will be subject to investigation.
