Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of this position is to provide clerical and support services needed to maintain a Health Record System in accordance with Joint Commission, State and Federals laws, and other governing agencies.

Some job responsibilities may include, but are not limited to: 
  • Performs general office duties in the H.I.S. office, to provide information regarding active patient medical records to interdepartmental and outside agencies, according to HIPPA and H.I.S. policies. 
  • Process all correspondence requests for active patients to provide outside agencies information for continued patient care, according to MDH,HIPPA, and H.I.S. guidelines and policies. 
  • Code all patient physicals using the ICD-10 diagnosis book, to provide current somatic diagnosis and codes for each patient medical record, according to MDH guidelines and SHC policies. 
  • Enter all data related to processing patient medical records into the HMIS computer system, to provide accurate data for each patient, according to the HMIS guidelines. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:   Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Two years of experience compiling and maintaining health records.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute additional experience on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Medical Record classifications or Patient Administration Specialists and Health Services Management specialty codes in the health records management field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.  

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The desired candidate should possess:
  • Experience with HMIS.
  • Experience with transcribing for doctors release summaries.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Candidates for this classification must demonstrate the ability to type at a minimum speed of 20 words per minute.
