Introduction

The Charles Hickey, Jr. School (CHS) traces its beginnings to the House of Refuge, which opened in 1850. Located on Frederick Avenue in Baltimore City, the House of Refuge was the first facility built in Maryland for the sole purpose of housing juvenile offenders in a separate facility from adult offenders. Later, the facility's name changed to Maryland School for Boys, and moved to its present location near Loch Raven in 1910.

POSITION DUTIES

The main purpose of this position is to perform maintenance on electrical systems, equipment and machinery such as inspecting and installing controls, switches, meters, fuses, wires, motors, light fixtures, outlets and transformers. Will be responsible for troubleshooting and testing electrical components. This position also includes painting, plumbing, and HVAC. Simple construction, repairs to roadways and walks, routine preventative maintenance, and general services work.

The bulk of the employee’s work time is spent in the actual performance of maintenance and repair tasks. However, on occasion the employee may serve as a lead worker. The employee assigns work, examines completed work and provides immediate guidance and assistance to a team of unskilled or semi-skilled employees such as Maintenance Mechanics and Janitorial employees.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Eighth grade.

Experience: Three years of experience in the building maintenance or building construction trades including two years of experience assigning, reviewing and approving the work of other building maintenance or building construction workers. 

Note: Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military experience at a rank of Corporal/Petty Officer or higher, as a non-commissioned officer in utilities classifications or mechanical maintenance management specialty codes in utility systems repair, on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Strong preference will be given to applicants that possess the following preferred qualification(s). Include clear and specific information on your application regarding these qualifications.  

1. Experience installing light fixtures, outlets, transformer, troubleshooting and testing electrical components by applying appropriate electrical theories, principles and codes to address specific electrical problems.

2. Possession of a High School Diploma or GED

3. Possession of a Trade Certificate in the trades of electricity, plumbing, HVAC, painting, carpentry, or ground maintenance.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

Applicants who meet the Minimum Qualifications will be placed on the eligible list categorized as Qualified, Better Qualified, or Best Qualified.  Candidates shall be certified to the eligible list for a period of one year.  This list will be used by the DJS hiring agency to select employees.
