Main Purpose of Job

The Maryland Center for School Safety (MCSS) is a small independent unit of government that provides grant funding, training, and other resources to support schools throughout Maryland. Our agency mission is to promote and enhance safer school communities, and this position reports directly to the Communication and Engagement Manager. Work ranges from creative to administrative to project-based and includes regular production, design, editing, and development, research, handling of information requests, preparing reports and correspondence, and liaising with a wide range of stakeholders. The position will attend meetings, possess advanced organizational skills, professional digital/multimedia design, production, and editing skills, and demonstrate an ability to think proactively and prioritize work.

POSITION DUTIES

The Communication and Multimedia Specialist produces multimedia products for the Maryland Center for School Safety; coordinates and executes the production of high quality live and pre-recorded video and audio packages and impressive digital/print media products; ensures that the information contained within such multimedia packages/products is professionally disseminated to the public through the MCSS website, a diversity of social/digital media platforms, video sharing platforms, email newsletters, and traditional print publications; assists the Communication and Engagement Manager with preparation and provision of media and public relations advisories/requests; conducts research for multimedia packages, memos, and brochures as directed while maintaining and updating the MCSS website and social media pages; conducts research for and provides information to the Communication and Engagement Manager as requested.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION: A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.

EXPERIENCE: Five years of experience in administrative staff or professional work. One year of this experience must have involved one or more of the following: the supervision of other employees, overseeing and coordinating the general operations of a unit, applying rules and regulations, or exercising responsibility for the development of policies or procedures.

Notes:

  1. Additional experience in administrative staff or professional work may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.
  2. Additional graduate level education at an accredited college or university may be substituted at the rate of 30 semester credit hours on a year-for-year basis for the required general experience.
  3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer involving staff work related to the administration of rules, regulations, policy, procedures and processes, or overseeing or coordinating unit operations or functioning as a staff assistant to a higher ranking commissioned officer on a year-for-year basis for the required education and experience.

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

One (1) year of experience in multimedia production.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of the principles of high quality social and digital media products; Skill in oral and written communications; Skill in the production of high quality live and pre-recorded video and audio packages and impressive digital/print media products; Ability to show and tell high-quality, compelling, and relevant multimedia stories, oversee pre-production, production, and post-production tasks to produce live and recorded multimedia programming, expertly shoot/record and edit educational multimedia products independently; ability to develop content that can be repurposed for social media, advertising, and MCSS website; Ability to (1) apply the principles of marketing in the planning and implementation of digital and social media campaigns, (2) present information in a creative, tasteful, brand-conscious, and effective manner, (3) establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with others, and (4) exercise a degree of creativity and imagination in recommending alternatives for problem solutions; Ability to use social/digital media platforms, video sharing platforms, email newsletters platforms, and traditional print publications; Ability to manage an organizational website; Ability to work effectively as part of a team.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Employees in this classification are subject to Substance Abuse Testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulation 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs. Applicants must also consent to a complete criminal and extended background investigation. Proof of eligibility to work in compliance with the Immigration Reform and Control Act and travel throughout the state are required.
